As long as you go there via http://silver-dollars.com, I get credit.

Once you sign up, get your mates under you and you'll be away laughing. :)

Yeah. I don't want to damage the coin at all, so don't want to use anything acidic (which includes lemon juice and vinegar). I just want to get the organic dirt off the coin. I'm wondering if acetone would be a good choice.

An ultrasonic bath would be great for getting dirt off. Adapting an old ultrasonic toothbrush as a source could be an interesting experiment.

Well, with my vast experience of a couple hours effort, I would say use ammonia. Silver coins that I had not done a very good job of washing came out of a 5 minute dip in ammonia and a bit of toothbrush work with soapy water looking really good. The dirt was gone and they had a bit more shine, but they still had that old coin look to them. Other coins I had that were stained also came out quite well. I honestly can't tell the coins that I cleaned from the ones that didn't need cleaning.

Some of the really crusty ones I went back and forth from 30 minutes in ammonia to 5 minutes in lemon juice. Still working on some of them, but a few de-crusted quite nicely. My one prize 1935 sixpence I would now consider too shiny and there is a bit of bubbly looking damage where the major crust was, but it is still an improvement as far as I am concerned. It was so corroded before I could barely make out the date.

I have also been playing with a couple of really corroded pennies. So far they have not been nearly as successful as the silver coins.

I held off going out today due to expected thunderstorm that never showed up. From the looks of the rain radar, Timaru and Oamru are getting a soaking and the rain is moving offshore from there.

Heading to Hagley shortly. I'll probably be somewhere close to Victoria Lake if anyone wants to come down for a social hunt.

i have the fisher goldbug....but my readings will be different than yours..the silvers normally come up between the 79 and 85 depending on what it is...
from what i have seen so far all the different fishers have different numbers for what something will come up as...like i think a $1 and $2 gold coin comes up around the high 60's on roberts F75..but mine come up at 79 and not sure what they come up at on the F2.
