Hi Shane,

Spent a few days in your neck of the woods a couple of weeks ago. Oldest I pulled up was an 1875 penny and an 1881 halfpenny.

One park here, there must be hundreds, I've pulled about a dozen out so far, it was also where I found my first two silvers.
Never thought coins would interest me but once you have them they are hard to part with!

Exactly. Coins become interesting when you go hunting for them, whether it be a 1 cent piece or a penny.
Thats a good haul you got there Poohbear. 4 silvers in one hunt is cool but that 1879 penny is even cooler. Whats the oldest coin any of us have found here in NZ. My oldest is a 1854 penny token.

Shane

My oldest coin found so far is an 1845 East India Trading Company 1 cent piece. It is very similar to an English penny of the same age.
I also have an 1868 English penny in very rough condition.

Oops, dont know where i got 4 from, 7 is pretty impressive. I like this old coin thing. After finding hundreds of coins it boiling down to the oldest one. I think Hatter found some 1840 coins or somewhere round then. Interested in hearing what others have found.

Nice one Gjj109 and Metalkiwi. Im keeping a short record of these old coin finds as they are particularly interesting. There just may be a late 18 century one out there. Wouldnt that be something.

I thin the oldest silver I've found is an 1872 florin, from our favourite spot - Hagley Park.

Oldest coin is a 1806 to 1808 George III penny - too corroded to verify the date but this type of penny was only made during those 3 years. My oldest silver so far is an 1844 half crown. Both coins were beach finds with the 1/2 crown from when a stream washed out the sand to base clay. A year ago tomorrow actually! Surprisingly the old penny was found in the dry sand.

Kiwijm scored a Cartwheel last month. A Cartwheel is well up near the top of my wish list as it would be cool to break into the 1700's. They pre-date European settlement but the old timers must have brought some with them!

I have completed an exhaustive analysis of my British pennies and have compiled the following statics:

1850’s = 1
1860’s = 3
1870’s = 4
1880’s = 4
1890’s = 4
1900’s = 12
1910’s = 25
1920’s = 15
1930’s = 25
1940’s = 1

oldest silvers

three pence = 1889
six pence = 1880
shilling = 1882
florin = 1852
half crown = 1900

I have 10 coins PRE 1900...all pennys..mu oldest is 1873

I Have 1 silver that might be older but it is that badly worn that i cant see a date on it..but it has the young queen on it of the late 1800's series of coins..
