Ok i am taking the advice of others and from now on i will post all my pics on this page...

Today i was out for a couple hours..didnt find a lot...22 coins in total..2 of which i spent to buy a drink..this is thirsty work..lol

what i did find that i liked was this pin i think might be a navy pin..and a silver button that i think is real silver..

Also i found the little silver end off a bycicle break wire which of course is very small...what amazed me about it is that it was the only metal in the hole and it was at a depth of 10 inches and my gold bug sounded off nice and loud like it was a silver ring which i was hoping it was..but alas it wasnt..but to think the machine picked such a small thing up at such a depth is good to know.

Hi Poohbear. Glad to be first to post your new page. Awesome. Yes its odd wot sounds off the detector to a high degree. Sometimes mine just goes off on silver, start digging all good then the target dissapears.. Probably gets caught up in a shell or something.. not sure. The other day i had a silver hit. Dug down half a meter and still the ace kept dinging. Then i noticed a 2 dollar coin in my digging pile. Hmm i thought, is there more, so i kept digging, and digging until i thought..ok thats enough. I stopped. Now im left wondering wot was. Probably a stash of alloy cans.. who knows. 1 cent pieces ding like a silver ring or something on mine, even at depth..

the 1 cent pieces ding off the same signal as the gold coins on mine...so if i get a solid 79 from 0 to 3 inches i am 99% sure it is a gold coin...solid 79 4 inches or deeper and i am 99.9% sure it is a 1 cent.

Yes dan i would like to do that one day when i can aford it..lol...i know robert would be keen also..he wants to try out his F75 on gold hunting im sure.

Nice finds NZPB.
That possible navy pin is a US Marines EGA hat badge.
The E is eagle, G is globe and of course A is anchor.

I found one very similar a few months back which I am told is
genuine but cant be 100% sure. Could be a copy.
There is some info here

looking forward to more posts.

Thats great going and you have conclusively proven that not only did Wyatt Earp come to keep the peace in Kiwiland but he lost his shooter while he was at it! He must have got scared at the wildness of the Ashburton frontier and taken off so fast back to the good old US of A that he dropped the badge and shooter!

It is natural that he dropped the heater and badge in Christchurch on the way through to Lyttelton because thats where the ships left from. He had to go through Christchurch to get to Lyttelton.

I am not so sure it was wallabies unless he thought that they were large meeces (plural of mice???) with big legs and was terrified shitless though it was more likely Mckenzie the sheep stealers Dawg protecting McKenzie after they got Wyatt over to track him down and capture him following New Zealand Armed constabulary failure to do so.

Cool set of finds there Poohbear. A nice mixed bag of goodies. I cant get out at the moment and are suffering cronic withdrawl..lol. Correct me if im wrong but Wyatt Earp was famous for his gun which was a colt peacemaker with an extra long barrel of neally 12 inchs i think from memory. I used to have a replica and we called it the Wyatt Earp special. I also had a NAVY COLT. Dad has them now. I will try to dig up the photos of them. I think dad shortened the barrell so it would fit in his frame. They are plastic kitsets which i dont think you can buy anymore. Very cool and they look like the reel thing. Hmmm, navy colt. I prefer the dragoon myself.

It was said that Western Dime Novel author Edward Buntline - real name Edward Zane Carroll Judson - Ned Buntline was a character who had a pretty colourful life though embroidered a bit - fought in Florida I think in the Seminole Wars, in the navy for four years. I think he got offside with the other midshipmen and challenged all twelve or thirteen to a duel and wounded some of them. He also fought in the Amercian Civil War I think. He may have been in politics and also went around half shickered giving lectures on temperance!

In any case he had a chequered and adventurous career. He took the pseudonym 'Ned Buntline' - Ned for obvious reasons and Buntline from a Marine terminology. It was said that he had a dozen or so special order Colt Model 1873 revolvers also known as Colt Frontier or Colt Peacemakers made up for presentation to various personalities. It is said that most of them later had the barrels cut down though Earp is said to have used his one to wallop people on the head if they got stroppy.

As for the Navy Colt - Ned Buntline maybe got his inspiration from a few extra long barrel Navy Colts which existed. As you can see the Navy Colt is one of my favourites - the one I have illustrated was used on the Otago Gold fields. An average Colt Navy will cost you around $1800 now.

Today original Colt Dragoons are worth untold and in better than average condition many, many thousands. A Goldfields one did turn up about thirty years back and I know of two Dragoons carried in New Zealand, one in a case and that would be worth around six figures today.
