I would have too agree... ever since I found my first one last week I am dying to find more! Though that 3p is not cleaning up easily... I put in in lemon juice for quick dip and it didn't even change one bit!

I like using the vinigar & salt method of cleaning cause it seems to just get rid of the grim and leaves the coin still looking "uncleaned". but for some reason that 3p won't clean up... am thinking of leaving it longer....

Oh and I went back to that spot and found another silver coin! a 1945 3p in really good shape! the clubs on the back still have most of the details and it was even shiny when I found it! I will have to post a pic of it later.

For cleaning silver coins. Try putting some alluminium foil, bout 150mm by 150mm in a small container, two teaspoons baking soda and some boiling water. Repeat process as needed.

I will have to give it a try and see what happens...

Have you ever tried the salt & vinegar combo? I find it works best if you rub the salt in with a q-tip that has been dipped in the vinegar... I heard that this is good to clean copper coins too... I will have to have a go

Vinegar is an acid, so it cleans by eating metal. So don't use it on coins that could be worth something to a collector.

Im finding now that after an anicial clean or two, i just leave the coins as they are, mostly. Reason, ive further damaged or scratched a few. The more i learn about cleaning/restoration i can come back to them later and touch them up.

That method is for removing the tarnish (Silver Sulphide) from the coin. Many collectors prefer their silver items to retain their "patina".

I'm currently trying out an ultrasonic cleaner. It takes a LONG time because it's only a low power domestic one, and there's a LOT of dirt to take off coins coming out of the ground. BUT I think it is the method that will produce an end product with the least damage.

There you go Gnut. How does one clean that silver and wot are the downsides if any! Im definately no expert. I only know wot ive learned from personal experience over the last few months and info ive learned from those on this site. One thing i do know is that unproven techniques by oneself will almost certainly damage or reduce the value of said coin. Even those green scourers will ruin a silver coin on contact. Patience seems to be the key me thinks.
By the way Gnut, we dig your avatar.

Cheers for that guys!
I mostly just rinse and clean my coins with soap and water... but as I am hunting near the sea some of my silver coins come out with that bit of green or red on them... so as for value they are pretty worthless untill I can get that off... But i LOVE it when I find one that is mint and only needs a rinse! (not many of those though :( )

I think that I have more of a thrill finding old silver coins than gold jewelry... that being said I need the jewelry to fund the habbit! Without that gold ring I would still be using my old $30 cheapy!

By the way I have managed to save up my $2 an $1 coin finds and I am finally going to get a garrett pro-pointer!!!! which means more time hunting less time retreiving!

Yeah I am not a fan of avitars but I saw this one and I HAD to have it... it says it all for me... lol

I have off on monday so i am hoping to have a day of it and will post my results....

when you used lemon juice did you add baking soda too? All my coins have been cleaned this way and they come up awesome. Forreall stubborn ones soak ages and then thicken the juice/soda mixture till its pastey and use the soda like a kind of grit...you won't damage the coin as its real fine but hey at end of day 99% of our coins will never be true collecters ones so the odd scratch here and there matters nothing if you were to damage it.

so lemon and baking soda? no i haven't tried that. I will have to do a test on one of my "already ruined" coins. with the vinigar and salt solution I do the same with the salt... I rub it in with a qtip and it works wonders I am a bit fearful to try and clean the 1908 coin as I don't want to devalue it... But I will try the baking soda with a junk coin first.

As promised here are my silver finds to date... I have no idea the ratio of silver to non-silver coins as I have not counted up my coins yet but I will get to that sometime.

So far I have 13 silver coins and here is the pic all of them are from just two spots that I have been going to except that 1942 3d which was found when I just made a quick stop off the side of a road. Enjoy.

Hit the jackpot on silver coins last night. Went through an area NZ PoohBear and I had covered before (could still see our holes) and found a 1903 and a 1908 3-pence, a 1937 shilling, and a 1900 half crown. Funny how it goes, the last few times out I just found pocketfuls of 1 and 2 cents and the occasional stray dollar.
