Nice finds but keep going.

What might help you figure out what your numbers mean is to set up a test bed. A patch of garden or the corner of your lawn is best rather than relying on air testing.

Check the area over to make sure you haven't already got something buried, dig them up if you do find something. Then bury, at various depths, examples of targets that you do find now including the junk. Then cover them up. Some people glue the targets to a pice of plactic or put then in one of those little resealable bags.

I use golf tees with a number on them which lies over the target. The numbers correspond to a list in a note book which tells me that is buried and how deep. Set your tagets about a foot apart from each other. You will find that the readings you get may change over time as a halo effect builds up around the target. Might be good to put a piece of junk like a bottle top etc in the same hole as one of your good targets as this is a good way of interpreting a signal that doesn't quite sit steady.

The test bed isn't something that you set up just the once. It is good to go back to time and time again, just to get the most out of your detector.

The silver 3d's I have found were bouncing between 33 and 43 and the silver shillings I have found were in the 50's. This is on my F2 so other machines will be different. I havnt found any 6d's yest or florins etc etc.

I have one of each silver coin bar a full crown... I will have to try them out and see where they lie on the id scale... I have an f2 as well. my 3d's are 39/40 when at 1-2 inches but at 3+ the id can go into the 50s. I also skip over solid 64s cause i kept finding bottle caps... until i pulled out a $2 coin! now I will pull each 64/65 lol. Cheers

Keep in mind that NZ silver is not pure silver, and neither is the 'new' British silver, and they will both read slightly differently from each other for the same coin and very differently than the 'old' British silver which will be a higher number.

Here are the other finds from the same day.

Another dog named Ben???? in the same area??? what are the odds? Guess it is a more common dog name than I thought. Found a couple of dollar coins and a penny. nothing really to note.

But I am going to have a ID test this afternoon in my back yard to see what some coins ring up as.

I will be testing:
Gold
a 1/2 sovereign (thanks to my wife :) )

Silver:
3p
6p
shilling
florin
1/2 crown
1/2 ozt .999 silver round (just in case ;) )

I will post my results with depth readout when I am done.

Here is the pic for the finds:

Well yesterday's finds definitely helped get me closer to the "Shitload" of silver mark.

I haven't been out much lately so instead I have been doing a fair bit of study and it all paid off yesterday during my lunch break! I have been wanting to get some older coins since the oldest I've found is an 1911 penny and I did just that! At first I pulled out these two small coins I had no clue what they were as they were well worn but when I got back home I cleaned them up with some soapy water and to my amazement both were 1800's sixpence! one has the date still visible 1887 while the other is so worn that you can only just make out Queen Victoria's brow... I also found that silver heart ring just sitting on the surface as well as the golden cross...( i was excited to find that until I cleaned it up and saw that it was just gold plated... oh well). As for that silver locket I think that the stone could still be in the ground too bad detectors can't pickup gems... lol. And to add to the silver I also found another 1935 sixpence... makes two now.

Well here are the pics!

Nice finds Gnut. Those silver coins are not easy to come by. Maybe one or two per hundred coins found. Ive got 11 silvers and its exciting to dig/fossick one up.

Guess I've got the spot considering that those silver coins/jewelery make for 7 in an area about less than 1 hector! And I am still not done! This is the same spot that I found that 1941 1/2 crown in very good condition. I can't wait till I can get another go at that spot!!!! I LOVE PULLING UP SILVERS!!!!! but I really have the bug now that I found two 1800's sixpences! I am hoping to pull a lot more out of this spot... and I maybe the gold fairy could send me a full or 1/2 sovereign? oh sorry about that I must have been dreaming! lol

I will have to put up a photo of all my silver finds when I get a chance... I am not sure how many there are. cheers guys!

Yesterday i found 55 coins. One was a 1947 NZ sixpence. Thought i had struck silver but these 1947 and on are cupronickel. Only 1933-1946 are 50% silver.

Ok so I went back to the spot where I had found the two 1800's 6 pence coins and the silver keeps coming! Only had about 1/2 an hour... and did not find much as I take way too long recovering targets...(I need to get a pinointer!)

So after finding some old decimal coins I get this "ding" with an id of 61-62 which would usually be a 1 cent piece so I finally recover the coin and it does look like a 1 cent until I gently rubbed a bit of the dirt off and low and behold a nice 3p from 1908! I will be going back there today for another 1/2 lunch break detect to see if there are any more goodies! This is the same area that I found the silver 1/2 crown and shilling... I can only hope!

I also found an old button which I think says, "Auckland . A Wright . "

Here are the pics.
