I think Shane is on to it with his Ace 350.
Sure he might dig a little more trash (I know I should be) but at least if he gets a signal he digs, unlike me who seems far to choosy/lazy and no doubt I miss out on some cool stuff.

Hopefully that elusive gold fairy will be kind enough to put a ring next a $2 coin then at least I should stumble on to it with my pro-pointer.
*8^)

Hi there Guardian. Yes my 350 has been good to me. Fortunately my machine lets off a bell/ding ding type sound when it strikes metal. The on screen level indicates what type of metal its found. This makes for quick identificatioin of a target. It is very good at identifying iron. I dont dig the iron targets unless theres a reoson like clearing the junk out to get to the real target or if the signal bounces suspiciously. Coins and silver type targets let out a possitive ding ding ding most of the time and that helps alot to. You would be surprised wot comes out of the ground with an uncertain signal tho. Some of my best finds have been from suspect signals that ive dug anyway. You can never be to sure. Basiccally, if its not iron ill try to dig it. The 350 goes deep enough to get most targets so i dont think im missing alot. Who really knows and just how much/far do you want to dig anyhow. A deep signal is hardly ever clear. In saying that the deeper the older the relic. If we found GOLD rings everyday then it wouldnt be so exciting when we do. Took me 18 rings and 5 months later before i dug my first one. Patience is the key thus being rewarded when one makes a nice find.

hahaha my goldbug has been good to me to..and i dig most signals...there are a few that i am 100% sure of that i dont dig..but most i do.
that is roughly how long it has taken me to find my first one to shane...but it is all a part of the thrill of the hunt..it is good exercise..the fresh air is nice and meeting other ppl detecting is allways good.

Hi Shane
My first detector was an Ace 250 I thought the machine was brilliant but unfortunately I was one of those 1/100 people who just couldn't handle the bing - bongs(it did my head in).
My old man still has his ace 250 and when I used it a few months back.... well I just had to get another machine.
I was going to get a fisher F2 and ended up with the Garrett AT GOLD ~scratches head~ not sure how I jumped that much ah well I'm happy with it except it's no good at the beach in the salt water or wet sand. Something I knew of before I brought it and now it's a case of I want to, because I can't!!!

nzpoohbear

I hear ya! I haven't been on a hunt yet that hasn't at least paid for petrol. I haven't found much cool stuff but I was thrilled when I noticed that I was working through my right of passage
matchbox car - Milk token - Old toy gun... first silver coin...
Getting out and clearing the mind is the thing at the mo, lots of stress with house in chch, job hunting, new city etc.
This machine has paid for itself many times over in therapy alone *8^)

Well, I did it backwards - the obviously better way. The pinpointer arrived today from Katakati and NOW I will put the security wand up for sale on trademe. Much better than going for days with no pinpointer capability.

Yes, the ding dings can drive you crazy in a hot spot. So im finding..but it works well on the beaches up hear. Does the new AT PRO make the same dinging. Ive thought lately about getting a better detector, which i will at some stage, but to be honest the more i use the 350 the more i enjoy it cos it seems to do the job. Most of the targets are quite shallow i find and well within reach. can punch down in the dry sand amazingly far.
Anyhow, i shouldnt rant on. This is PB's page.

Hi Shane - The At Pro has the standard mode (ding/dongs) and also has a pro mode which I think they call tone rolling
I'm not sure if it's 3 or 4 tones but sound volume rises and falls as you go over a target and of course tone pitch depending on target. I have the AT GOLD which doesn't have the standard mode it has what you would call the pro mode on the AT PRO and also has a true all metal mode. The iron audio mode also helps check if a signal is clear, I still get tricked by squashed screw caps though.
I'm happy with it but I can't beach hunt with it ahwell.... good excuse to get another machine later on *8^)
A lot of people say the AT PRO is an up graded ACE350 the big things over the ACE 350 would be the numeric target ID, Iron audio, Pro Mode and waterproof to 10ft. It would be interesting to see a depth comparison between the ace 350 and the at pro, get the feeling there might not be much in it.

Hey PB why ya gone quiet on us ?

Well ya can't complain at that!
I was thinking the other day that there must be a heap of stuff where they had/have Christmas in the park and sparks in the park.
I've noticed that here in Dunners the parks only seem to give up $8 and that's it, maybe it's an attention span thing or possibly I should hunt the whole park and not just the hot spots, ohwell a good excuse to go back!

Good to see you got some silver today, buddy. I think Hagley's going to be giving up silver for some time yet. I hope.

I ended up doing about an hour in Kaipoi Domain, with just 1 & 2c coins coming out, and the bloody same in a quick test at Barrington Park. Grrrr.

Managed to find another spot in Hagley Park that Poohbear hasn't vacuumed clean yet - Found an almost immaculate 1946 sixpence sitting on top of a root with about 3 mm of dirt over it.. That coin's been sitting there at least 50 years just below ground level.

That was the only silver unfortunately, although an 1863 penny's not bad going either. Along with a QEII 1953-54 visit medallion and an unknown coin so encrusted with dirt I can't see any detail. I suspect it's an underweight non-silver florin.
