Not bad money for a florin! I had no idea they were worth this much - thought about $25 each maybe, you had two similar ones when you were here.

Better find some more then! NUGGY

That's a DOUBLE florin. Some of them have an inverted "1" for an "I" in "Victoria", and are worth about 3x normal value.

Ok, I didn't quite read it properly. Never heard of the double florin before - not a coin collector. NUGGY

i sold one of mine for $80 1 gothic florin date 1881 i kept my 1878 gothic florin and i have it on trademe with 2 other florins for $200 reserve if they are in poor condition you can get $25 if there in unc condition around $600 mine is vf-ef so im guessing around $150-$200 for the one coin :) they are a sort after coin all over the world

gave a solid 82 on the AT pro normally that number is either a few things 2c,some pennys, bottletop's the british gothic florins were a solid 91 i guess it's because there .925 silver and the NZ halfcrowns only 50% silver, it cleaned up real nice looks almost UNC :)

Hiya. Great finds there mate. The best I managed yesterday was a 43 shilling and a 35 sixpence. I'm not a coin expert but have been collecting for over 20 years and I would grade your half crown as fine to good fine. That's pretty good for a coin that has been in the ground for a few years.

Whoever designed the NZ half crown sure did a great job. Wish I could find more of them.
I don't know about grades but I see there is a piece out of the rim at the top and I think the kings head is actually a bit worn when looking closely. Yes it sure is a nice coin though.

yes i nicked the rim with digging tool lol, and kings head has very light wear, worse looking ones on trademe for $25 plus, my guess was VF very fine as the detail is nice. in new zealand its hard to get what a coins worth in its catalouge value even trying to get half of the catalouge value is a struggle. i guess us kiwis are tight arses when it comes to collectables. im going to sell my coins out of NZ like ebay or something if i list my 100 silver coins ill be lucky to get silver weight value here :(

Hi Goldstalker, There are a few coin grading systems but the most commonly used is the standard British system. This is the system we use in New Zealand.
At the bottom it starts with Poor, Fair, Fine, Very Fine, Extremely Fine then Uncirculated.
Inbetween there are terms like " Good Fine " and " Almost Uncirculated " and " Brilliant Uncirculated "
I hope this helps.

hi again i think youll find that poor fair and fine all fall under AVE/CIRC then VF EF UNC otherwise there would be alot of grades :) thats how they grade them (new zealand coins) and price them in the 2013 john bertrand catalouge :)

That is correct to a degree.... poor, fair and fine have been lumped together as ave/circ in the bertrand catalogue but that is only because most New Zealand coins are worth bugger all in poor, fair or fine condition and there would be no point in listing separate prices for them. The way coins are listed in the Bertrand catalogue is simply their way of listing their retail prices. It does not include all grades of coins.
So yes, you are right..... there are a lot of grades. And trust me. Serious collectors do use intermediate grades like " good fine " Etc.
Sorry, I'm not trying to be a know it all. Just offering up some information.
Keep up the hunting. You are obviously having a lot of success. Lots of silver.
Kind regards,
Grubby.

I don't know of any coin dealers on the coast..... I'm sure there probably are some. There were definitely a few in chch pre earth quake. I guess there are still some there. I live in Dorkland and only know the local dealers and a couple in Wellywood. Maybe some of the west coast or ChCh detectormifyers on this forum can help out.
Good luck.
