First hunt in two weeks this morning. A few pennies, decimals and five small denomination silvers. Coolest find was this silver plated number 13 "Doris" thimble.

another Charles Horner find. cool.

"....In the early 1880s, Charles Horner patented the relatively simple idea of a silver thimble sandwich with a strong, steel ‘middle’. He went on to design, perfect and patent the steel-cored silver thimble, registering his famous trade name ‘Dorcas’ – an inspired invention on which the Charles Horner business thrived, selling many thousands of the thimbles throughout Britain as well as abroad. To the thimble collector – and there are thousands throughout the world – Charles Horner and the ‘Dorcas’ thimble are almost synonymous...."

Cheers for the info there Tony. Unfortunately it's not a Charles Horner but could possibly have a link to his thimbles. The thimble I found reads "13 DORIS" with no makers marks. The research I did seems to point to Charles Iles & Co of Birmingham, who may have sold undecorated thimbles to Charles Horner.

Here's a quote I found;

"Quoted from Identifying Steel-cored thimbles by Diane Pelham Burn:

Doris Thimbles

This steel-cored thimble was made by Charles Iles and Co. of Birmingham, but there is no maker's mark on it. Only the name "Doris" and the size number appear.
The Iles firm specialised in thimbles made of steel and other base metals. It is thought that much of the Doris production was sold to other thimble makers, possibly including Charles Horner, who then put their own trademark on it.
Thimbles with "DORIS' on them are quite RARE today."

Just another bit of info I found;

The Doris Thimble. The DORIS thimble is probably the nearest thing there is to a sterling thimble by Charles Iles. Like the DORCAS, DREEMA and DURA thimbles by Charles Horner, Henry Griffith & Sons and Walker & Hall the DORIS thimble is a steel cored thimble clad with sterling silver. The DORIS thimble is thought to have been made for Abel Morrall (a needlemaker and retailer from Redditch) and believed to have been introduced after 1918 when the DORCAS patent ran out. That Iles made his own "me too" version of the popular Charles Horner Dorcas thimble is not surprising though it is actually of inferior quality to the DORCAS thimble so, as a consequence, they never really caught on. I guess that's why so few are found today.

Had a spare hour this arvo so hit a well worked spot near home. Not much left there as expected but did get this cool old sterling silver badge. Not hallmarked but does have the familiar STG (Aussie silver) and the makers initials B&S. It's about the size of a sixpence and the enamel is in remarkably good nic for it's age. It was around 4" down so must be 1940's or 50's. A school badge maybe? Not sure but a cool find anyhow.

Happy Hunting.

From having a wee look around, that appears to be Queen Victoria's crown that was made to fit over her veil after her husband died in 1861, so that should date the badge.

Nice!

Up early and out this morning. Decided on a roadie out of town.
A three hour hunt at an out-of-the-way place yielded me some real nice silver. Also lots of the usual decimals and pennies...but strangely, not may other finds other than an NZ forces button, a fairly modern stainless backed watch and a bright and shiny 357 Magnum bullet case!

The silvers were;

1 x undateable Gothic florin.
1 x 1908 Brit half crown.
1 x 1926 Brit sixpence
1 x 1886 Brit threepence
2 x 1945 NZ sixpence
1 x 1936 NZ sixpence...
and 4 x NZ threepence of various dates.

An enjoyable Sunday hunt. Happy hunting to all.

Had a wee two hour hunt this morning around South Hagley. Best of the finds were;

1874 Brit shilling.
1843 Brit shilling.........my oldest so far...yay!
1900 Brit threepence.
1885 half penny
1919 Aussie penny.....
and an old brooch with the stone missing (bugger). Did look for it but nowhere to be found.

Happy hunting.

Managed to grab a couple more hours to hunt after tea last night. Went to South Hagley and hunted a strip that had been cleared of turf by a bulldozer....apparently for laying new pipe. Glad I did! Amongst the few pennies, 1 and 2c's...and two keys in one hole, was this very cool sterling silver badge.
After a bit of research, I see that the Carson Cup was a North Island Schools sub trophy to the main event, the Roller Mills Trophy.......kind of a fair play award. Gawd knows how the little 1956 badge ended up in Hagley!
Anyway, here's a link for those interested.

Happy hunting.

Hunted South Hagley after work tonight with Foiled Again. Warm and calm evening. Had one of those EXCEPTIONAL nights that you dream about. Ended up with 13 silvers (best ever in one hunt), 4 pennies, one Aussie half penny, 20 cents, a few 1's and 2's and a cool little pocket knife. Got my second standing Britannia Florin for the collection too, so absolutely buzzing tonight.
Nearly didn't join Jason this evening but a change of plans made it possible. Funny how the spur-of-the-moment hunts often turn out to be the best!
This silver haul was from a part of Hagley that has been well hunted over the years too..........It never ceases to amaze me how much stuff the old girl still has to offer up.

Happy hunting.
