Managed to get a few hours out this afternoon, to swing the coil at my local park. Dug four silvers.....one being a .925 earring stamped"Italy", one threepence, one shilling and .......my first SILVER half crown...wooohoooo!
Also got about a dozen pennies including a 1915 Commonwealth of Australia Penny, four half pennies and an assortment of other trinkets and scrap. Also a musket ball, shell cartridge...and a live round...don't know my ammo, so not sure what they are.
Had a real nice afternoon out in the sun. Lots of people cruising passed, wanting to know what I had found....all positive stuff, no negativity. A local guy came by and asked if I'd mind having a quick search of his garden for his wife's lost ring (lost while gardening a couple of years ago)..........no luck though. I enjoyed the afternoon so much, I think I'll go back there again tomorrow.

Managed an afternoon hunt with Roy1954 yesterday and had some nice finds....a 1945 threepence, a few pennies and a cool red brooch with a silver case. Also managed about three hours this afternoon and had a couple of "firsts"..........my first NZ military forces button and my first (and oldest to date) young bun penny, 1864 I think but the last digit is very worn and hard to read.

.......also.....dug this VERY old and fragile item at Hagley this afternoon. I think it may be a coin but not sure. It was about 6/7 inches deep and I nearly didn't dig it as the signal was so weak..... Glad I did tho!
I have it soaking in olive oil to try to get some definition but it appears to be quite worn and is extremely fragile.
I know I'm probably asking the impossible from these pic's but does anyone think they may have an idea of what and/or how old it could be?

Certainly a hammered something, whether a coin or not I'm unsure. Looks like copper and not silver? Is there a monarchs head anywhere or any writing you can make out? I'd say it is a jeton, a copper (coin like) gaming token from 14th/15th century Europe and miles away from home. Weird find!!

My greatest fear is that when I die my wife will sell my collection for what I told her it cost me.

Could be an early Australian penny.
Perhaps get another and compare.

Hey expat, you could be on to something here. It's most certainly copper not silver and no, I can't really make out much on it yet other than what can be seen in the pics. From the wee bit of research I've done, I don't think it's any sort of early Australian coin. The first pic seems to show the letters EMP possibly......but the other side is still a complete mystery. How cool would it be if this was actually a hammered jeton of some sort. As you said, it's one hell of a long way from home and wtf is it doing buried in Hagley?
Hopefully it will clean up a bit better over the next week or two, and I might be able to get something else off it that will help with ID-ing it.
Any other ideas most welcome.

On second thoughts it is too small to be a penny when compared to the size of your fingers in the pics.
However do you think the circular inner ridge visible in the first 2 pics is too perfect a shape to be hand made?

Yeah, thanks for you thoughts Metal Kiwi....much appreciated.............it's about thumbnail size (or slightly larger) and is quite thin and brittle. I don't know enough about hammered coins to be able to answer you on the point of perfect shape but perhaps expat or someone else may have an answer.
From the jetons I've seen on Google pic's, I'd say that its possible for the ridge to be quite circular but that's just what my uneducated eye perceives.......any other ideas???

Coming back this afternoon from an out-of-town job, I spotted a small park that I hadn't noticed before. Seeing as I had an hour to spare, I thought I'd give the coil a swing............really glad I did. Got my best ever haul of silvers in a relatively short space of time. Seven in total. Four NZ threepence's, one NZ sixpence, my first Australian threepence and my first British one shilling.....................needless to say I'll be going back there again sometime soon!

Nice finds, especially that Brit shilling!
Re your 'hammered' find, we used to find jetons in the UK fairly regularly in old ploughed fields etc and sometimes these had been drilled through for suspension as a necklace or similar. I think sometimes their curiosity value gave rise to this practice and would have ensured that they stayed out of the ground for years later than their counterparts. Until the chain or string around the neck broke I guess! Yours looks like it may have been similarly employed, one edge looks like it once had a hole drilled near it. Just a thought.
The central lozenge or diamond shape within a circle design on yours has similarities with a couple on this website, particularly no 4 I reckon.

Yeah, thanks for your thoughts and info there expat. I'm just not at all sure what I've got here. Roy1954 has kindly offered the use of his ultrasonic cleaner to see if that will help clean it up a bit more. I think I'll possibly give that a try next week.
The olive oil has helped but even with a powerful magnifying lens and a very bright LED light, it's still almost impossible to decipher anything other than a small patch that shows the giveaway signs of it being made of copper.
Gradually while cleaning it, I have noticed a small hole in dead-centre of the coin starting to empty of debris.......maybe a mm or two across but perfectly circular.
I suspect the edge that you think may have had a hole from being worn on a necklace, may in fact have been a nick where I suspect I hit it whilst digging ........F*?# it!!
The central hole made me think for a while, that it could possibly be an internment camp coin but I have pretty much dis-counted that now after seeing examples online.
The more I look at it, the more it looks to me to be a hammered jeton of some sort.

View a picture of the coin in the negative to see if that shows anymore detail.

You can use the following site to do this. (may need a better pic of the Coin)

http://www.freephotoeffects.net/effect.2.negative-image.html

Hopefully that makes sense.. ;)

That's a good idea. You could also load it into a photo editing program and play around with the brightness/contrast/colour sliders to see if you can make the detail stand out more.
