Here's a few new images of the "unknown" after nearly a week in oil. I have given each surface a gentle clean each day but still reckon it's pretty hard to be sure of anything yet. See also the negative images as suggested.

Hi all. Had a fantastic few hours out with Roy1954 on Saturday. I ended up with a 1940's/50's Royal Life Saving Society enamel badge, a 1917 Commonwealth Of Australia one penny in really nice condition, an 1895 Brit threepence (very worn) and a yet-to-be-determined 1860's/70's token. Hopefully after a good soak in olive oil, the token will reveal some detail............................

..............Well, after a couple of days soaking in olive oil, on Roy's suggestion I gave the token a very light rub with liquid soap and hot water....................it worked a treat! The token reveled enough to identify itself as an 1874 "United Service Hotel, Auckland" token (the rarer curved version).
It'll still need a bit more time in oil to show more detail but I'm stoked to have been able to id it.......thank you for your cleaning suggestions Roy.........much appreciated mate.

Had a hunt this afternoon with Roy at Hagley. Came away with a few pennies and three silvers......1933 shilling, 1935 florin and a 1942 half crown. Also dug a rare copper token....Scott Bros, Railway Foundry, Christchurch. Not dated but has the impressed number 109 on the reverse.

From Wiki pages- "Scott Brothers in Christchurch, New Zealand had an engineering works and iron foundry that supplied 11 steam tank locomotives to the New Zealand Government Railways in 1874. They are the only New Zealand manufacturer apart from A & G Price of Thames to have supplied the NZR with steam locomotives, and they manufactured viaducts for the North Island Main Trunk and Midland Railway. Their Atlas Works in Manchester Street, Christchurch also manufactured coal kitchen ranges".

Managed to get an hours hunt in today at my local park before the rains' hit this afternoon. Got a couple of silvers (both 1934), with the thrupence being the tidiest I've found yet......must have been dropped shortly after being issued.
Also got an old silver plated pocket watch (no makers id bugger it), a meccano pully thing, a large clock cog and some other brass thing.
Happy hunting all.

I'm a wee bit surprised by that Kiwikeith. I would have thought that the Coast would have been a bit of a treasure trove with all that history.
Do you research areas you intend to hunt before you go? Places like Kumara and Runanga have sooo much history, I would have thought that you would be bound to get some good treasure in those places. I realise Hector is quite a bit further North but surely Westport would have some historic old areas and parks to hunt?

Hi all. A couple of hours out today with Roy, and I struck me a bit of silver again! A 1934 and a 1946 shilling, a 1935 sixpence, a sweet 1926 Brit threepence and a nice 1922 Australian shilling (first one of those). I also dug this superb sterling silver N.Z. fern pin badge. This was in the same hole as the Aussie shilling so that dates it I guess, to around the late 1920's to 1930's. It was about 6 inches down. Also got a few pennies including a "young bun" but too worn to get a date from it.
Man this hobby is awesome......just can't wait til the next hunt.....bring it on!

Hi all. Down in Dunedin/Invercargill for work this week. Pretty busy so have only managed about an hour swinging the coil. Had a half hour before dark on Signal Hill in Dunedin.....one 1922 Brit threepence, a couple of 1922 pennies and an 1864 half penny. One day I hope to have enough time in town to catch up with the legendary tonznz, for an educated hunt around Dunedin.
Also a half hour in Balclutha with $8 spendies and three 1940's pennies.
Met up with Robert (Puiaki Supply) today in Invercargill, and collected my new 11" DD coil and a Lesche digging tool. Great to meet you Robert.....we could have chatted for hours!
Happy hunting all.

I think the fern badge is nz military. I have one the same in brass.

check out link, maybe officers had them in silver?

http://www.milimem.com/index.php?cPath=54_118_80

maybe also its Violet Walrond's lost Olympic brooch. see link below:
