Amazing finds. You can even see the crash damage to the plane with the bend in the wingtip. Its a Mk 11 Super marine Spitfire. The pilot obviously bailed out after being shot down over Hagley Park in 1945. That was of course " The Battle of Christchurch".

But just perhaps many years ago a young kid was out in the park with his mum. Who was pushing his younger brother in a cane pram. Little Roger was playing with his plane, when he crash landed it in a very muddy Hagley Park puddle. Come on Roger, we have to get home and get Dad his tea. " But Mum I have lost my plane, its here somewhere, it crash landed. We just don't have the time Roger to find your plane, we have to get Dads tea on. plus your younger brother needs his nappy change. Awwwww Mum. Its okay son, I will buy you another one. We will leave that one to No 8 wire to find, a few years down the track.

Cheers Trev aka " The Hatter"

Hi Creamer, yes I agree. Deffo looks to be hand made. If you look at it from underneath (sorry, no pic ) you can definitely see that it has been made from one piece of brass, neatly cut and folded.........certainly not a moulded cast.

Last couple of hunts produced a total of seven silvers, all deep and scratchy signals but unmistakably silver. Also a really nice condition 1861 penny and likewise, a super nice 1875 half penny.
The freekiest find last night tho, has to be an I.S. BARTLETT token from 1882, abeit completely toasted...exactly the same as Erickd's from the night before....same park too!.....spooky stuff.

GL & HH to all.

That's an incredible effort from that park indeed, signals are deep and if you swung to quick they could easy be missed.

Hi all,
Wasn't planning on posting after a short hunt last night unless I found anything of interest. Well, didn't find anything stunning but thought I'd post a pic of an amazing condition 1945 NZ shilling. Easily the best condition silver coin I have ever dug...so clean and shiny, you could easily pass it off as uncirculated.it's that good! Still appears to have that uncirculated sheen look to it.

Hi all,
Out for a wee hunt last night. Managed a first, and a big ole bucket list tick in the form of a 1916 Oz shilling. Well pleased with that, I continued on for half an hour or so until I got another deepish signal of about the same tone and numbers as the shilling. Long story short....another 1916 Oz shilling awoken from it's long sleep!
What are the odds. Imagine having a lazy tenner on that to happen!

GL & HH to all.

Cheers mate, I see your effort wasn't too shabby last night either. Wish I had your research skills tho...just wandering aimlessly in the dark doesn't seem to pay the dividends it used to...lol

A rather dark, misty and "icy coil" hunt last night produced a couple of nice silvers, a 1916 bronze coin that I think is of French origin, and a very cool old silver plated button. My first though on the lettering was Dunedin Fire Brigade but with the bit of research done, I could only find the usual crossed axes and fire helmet buttons on Victorian uniforms, so I doubt it's that.
The makers name is JR Gaunt, famous for making Military buttons, so I'm guessing that this button is a service button of some kind....any idea's?
Thanks in advance.

GL & HH to all.

Nice finds, JR Gaunt also made sporting association button's, I'm wondering if it German Football, Deutscher Fußball-Bund.
Just a thought.

Just posting pics of last weekends finds here too, to keep the timeline intact.

As well as the awesome little silver rugby ball with the amazing province, I also managed to score 18 silvers and heaps of pennies.
I think I'll definitely be giving that little domain another looksie sometime soon.
PS, check out the cool pic of ta tree in the domain growing up through the remnants of an ancient old stump....

GL & HH.

Managed to sneak a couple of hours out on Sunday. Five silvers in total but also managed a couple of firsts.
One is a definite first in the form of a sweet Brit1930 acorn sixpence...had an acorn threepence before but not a sixpence.
The second "first" is only a maybe. It's a Chinese coin but I suspect it's one of those "lucky" coins rather than a real one. It was only four inches down in a spot that Brit silver was seven inches, so I think I'm still awaiting my first real Chinese coin....bugger!

GL & HH to all.

"Chinese" coin is a relatively modern Japanese 5 Yen.
