Cheers. Yes, but to be honest Snowdrop, I think it's going to be pretty hard to top last year's total. So much of the silver came from one secret location. I now struggle to find any silver in that place....not hunted out, just challenging!
Relic hunting (social history) is still my number one passion though. I really love finding the old shop tokens and medaletts from the Boer War, WW1 and the various exhibitions of Victorian and Edwardian NZ. Everything else is just a huge bonus and fuel for the imagination along the way.

GL & HH.

Hi Roy and Happy New Year.
Yes, it's WW2 era. It had the year plate attached above the crown when I dug it (1946/47) but this dropped off when I started cleaning it.....I still have it though.
No service number engraved on the back with which to trace the owner unfortunately.

Double Florin hunt today...WOOHOO...together in one hole!

Back to the old tennis courts today. Found out through a bit of "papers past" research that there had also been a cricket club back in the 1920's/30's, sharing the same clubrooms but it amalgamated with another cricket club nearby in the early 40's and it's playing pitch behind the tennis courts, returned to pasture.
Will need to get a permission from the local farmer to hunt this field.

Scored 13 silvers today plus a nice old cuff stud, and my third Oddfellows lodge badge, c1930's.

GL & HH all.

Awesome to have those untapped spots and cool finds again. I have a couple of areas under my belt and will be hitting them hard when I'm back from holiday. Hoping to have time on holiday to hunt around

Finally got ma shit together and sorted my scrap. Got $85 for the year's worth, although would have been more if I'd kept ALL the scrap I dug!
As you can see, it's not all good stuff all of the time here in Chch but even the scrap can pay off, if you persevere!

Another hunt out in the wops today. Supposedly a well hunted spot but I hit a wee patch that others had obviously missed.
First piece of gold for the year too, in the form of an old 9ct (375) watch. It's hinged for both front and back but as yet, I have been unable to open it up. I'll carefully give it a bit of CRC on the hinges and see if that will help. I'm hoping to find either hallmarks or an inscription....or both inside. Would be cool if it has a date marking too!
Will add it to this post once I know.

Cheers mate, the thought had crossed my mind also...lol.
I'll be buggered if I can get it open tho. I tried soaking it overnight in CRC but this made no difference. I don't want to damage it by using a knife or any other sharp object to pry it open. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok, managed to gently pry it open using a toothpick and the blade of a tiny screwdriver. Fortunately, front and back both popped open quite easily but the hinge for the back broke.

Here are the results;

Unfortunately, no date or inscription ( or sovereign..lol) but does have a hallmark with possibly a date letter but very hard to read.

The b in the circle suggests 1875 - 1899. Do you think it is that old No 8?

Hi MK and thanks for the suggestion. I'm leaning more towards the letter being a "D" and the assay mark being an import mark (imported into the UK and stamped) from the London assay office. The D would fit along the lines of what I think is a more likely date for this watch....that being 1919.

Cheers, #8.
