Do you think the earthquake made all the silver and gold coins lie flat in the ground and so making them an easy target?

Interesting thought lol, I find it mind boggling how people can lose there coins so easily back in the old days, especially the penny's as they are so big, I have a show box full of the darn things and I bet a lot of you guys have too...that's a lot of missing coins

Hi all,
Thought I'd do a roundup of the years top 10 finds....but it's had to become a top 12, due to my rubbish elimination process!
So here we go with the first six....in no particular order, as trying to decide that would definitely do my head in!

1/- Four Sovereigns and one half sov....in one hunt!....totally unbelievable.

2/- HMS NEW ZEALAND, Jutland 1916 commemorative pin.

3/- Sterling silver NZ Fern badge. Likely a sweetheart badge but none the less, waaay cool.

4/- Pig shaped vesta case . This was a cool find in itself but to find a small key concealed inside, was just tooo much!

5/- Silver buckle ring. I had to include this because of the exceptional condition it came out of the ground in....stunning.

6/- Addington Railways peace demonstration token for 1919. This was a big bucket list tick, as I knew these existed and always hoped to find one.

The final six soon.

....and onto the final six. Once again in no particular order....

7/- My first ever half Sovereign.

8/- Diamond and Sapphire ring and the decorative 15ct gold band...both dug from under the same old tree on two separate hunts.

9/- Gilt and enamel WW1 Victory medalette, complete with original chain and clip...very rare.

10/- The 1840 Groat (four pence )...another bucket list item.

11/- Gold Victorian mourning locket ( no hallmarks) complete with dead loved ones hair lock still concealed inside....cool but ewww!

And finally, my personal very close contenderfor the number one spot...but pipped towards the end of the year, is...

12/- The Thomas Morris saddle and harness makers saddle plate. He produced saddles from his small shop in Oamaru between 1866 and 1880. From the small amount of research I have done, I believe this to be only one of two saddle plates bearing his name, to exist today....according to the local museum.

Can't wait to see what the next Twelve months will bring!

GL & HH to all.

Hi all,
First hunt of the year today. We're away camping out in the wops but fairly close to a small old rural Canterbury town. It's a very small community now but back in the 1890's through until the 1930's, it boasted a population of approximately 9000 residents at it's height including a reasonably large railway station.
Anyway, out for a run this morning I spotted an old abandoned tennis court, way out of sight from any road. On further inspection, I guessed it to be 1920's/30's era, and probably used up until the early 1970's.,,,, the latest dated coin being 1971.
Later in the day, I went back and gave it a thorough going over with the T2.
Certainly appears to never have been hunted before judging from the amount of finds. Popped 11 silvers all up including a nice 1934 florin.
The 1928 threepence is a first for me. Never had a triple acorn threepence before.
Also a cool surprise was the RSA badge . Can't find any service number on it unfortunately.
All in all, a very satisfying start to the year. Might pop back again over the next day or two for another looksie.

GL & HH to all.
