Thanks Roy. I seem to remember you digging one of those Addington Railway tokens back in the day. Do you still have it?
I believe that there were three versions struck. One is very rare (1-4 known) one is rare (10-20 known...same as I found) and a scarce one. Any idea which one you have?

The backs are all identical but the fronts (with the train) vary slightly. The rarest has a beaded edge with no initials above the weath. The next rarest has no initials and a plain edge (same as mine in the pic) and the more common has the beaded edge and initials LW above the wreath.

Hi all. One short hunt during the week produced a couple of nice finds.
A Kirkaldie and Stains, Wellington trade token and a very delicate and ornate enameled button. Also a real nice surprise..... an 1848 five centimes from Belgium.... King Leopold the First's reign. See also a pic of one in good used nic.
Found it in the same area as the 1820 US large cent a couple of weeks back....a real meeting of nations!

GL & HH all.

Hi all,
Here's a few of the more memorable finds from the past few hunts over the last couple of weeks.
A cool silver spring loaded shirt cuff or collar stud. I've also included a pic of one off the Net, complete with back clasp.
Included in other cool finds were....a small clock or strong box key, a tiny brass toy cannon (broken), a US Indian head cent 1890, a cool wee lead cat, a WW1 (I think) RAF wings badge with N and Z on alternate wings and.....the coolest find of the lot, what I think may be a very basic piece of trench art. The two bullet cases were found , one inside the other as you see the first pic. What makes me think it may be trench art is that both bullet cases have had the bottoms of them rounded off and flattened. Just wish the inner one had been named or dated, as these pieces often were. That's pretty much the only reason I have any doubt about it being trench art.

it's all out there....go get it!

Cheers mate, glad I could be of help. I've had a few of these cuff studs in the past, usually a plain piece of stone or glass as the top. This is the first sterling silver one I've found.
Always stoked to find anything with a bit of social history to it. That's why an RAF badge or a couple of old bullet cases put together a hundred years ago will always excite me more than finding a silver sixpence from 1933.

Hi all,
It's been a crazy busy time at work over the past couple of weeks so haven't been out much. Did however get out for a couple of hours last night with foiled again and another couple by myself today.
Amongst the pennies and pull tabs, were five small silvers, a very nice old horse brass from down real deep and what I consider to be the find of the week....a spoon handle.....yes, you heard right, a spoon handle.
After a bit of research on the makers marks, it turns out to be pretty old.
Thomas Yates was a pewterer working out of Birmingham between 1849 and 1882. He produced pewter cutlery and drinking vessels but with the eventual decline in the popularity of pewter, he went out of business. The difference with his cutlery was that it contained a core of twisted steel wire to keep the cutlery ridged and strong, hence the backstamp "steel wire"
A nice piece of Victoriana and I'm very happy to have it. Shame it wasn't complete tho!

What an amazing week of silver this past week has been. Increased the tally for the year by another 27 silver coins from five hunts at four different locations. Highlight of the silvers was a beaut 1872 Gothic florin from a good 10 inches down.
Also scored this beautiful sterling silver brooch (not hallmarked) and a .925 ring.
The best two finds tho, were dug on Saturday. Firstly, the snake buckle from a park that I know was used during the beginning and end of WW1 for military parades. Therefore, I reckon it must be from that era as it was a faint, scratchy deep signal.
Without a doubt tho, the "pig" was the find of the week. Thought it was just a lead toy when I first saw it emerge from the dirt but soon realised it was something soooo much better!
Turns out that it is a cool old vesta case for wax matches. Even cooler tho, was finding that instead of cruddy old matches inside, was a very old and very small slightly rusted key. To what.....the imagination runs wild!
GL & HH to all.

Only two hunts in two different locations this week, both on Saturday....one in the morning and one early evening.
It ended up being a bit of a silverfest with 19 in total including a nice 1945 florin and an 1875 sixpence linked onto a hallmarked silver chain.
Other cool finds were a winged rollerskate badge with "Chicago" stamped on it, and a vintage Victorian toy flintlock pistol made of lead and iron, unfortunately broken.
Hoping to get out a bit more this week....all going to plan!
