Ok....I've officially come to the conclusion that if anyone tells you that an area is hunted out and not to bother even trying, chances are that they already know how good it is and are just trying to protect their patch. Kinda figured this already but just firmed up the evidence even more conclusively.
Hunted one of these spots this afternoon for a couple of hours. Here's what hit the coil....

Six silvers including a nice 1866 sixpence, a H J Hall token, a nice piece of silver fob chain with each link individually hallmarked and probably the best find of the day....an NZ Field Artillery badge.
Lots of cool finds in this new-to-me "hunted out spot" ....and not all that hard to find either!
GL & HH to all.

*** the NZ Artillery Field Artillery badge is a sweetheart badge, not official military but is WW1 era...woohoo! ***

Another successful hunt last night with foiled again....cheers man, enjoyed your company once again.
Three star finds last night...
The first is this beaut little Queen Victoria medalette. Can't find any info on this one, either on the net or in the medalette book.

Second find was another medalette. This is a WW1 Patriotic NZ one from August 1914. A very timely find considering the 100 years commemoration of the start or WW1 was only a day or two ago.

The third find was a real surprise. It was a good 10 inches down and a real dodgy signal. Turned out to be an 1820 US large cent...the kinda find our American counterparts get all wet over finding.

Very happy with some awesome finds.

GL & HH to all.

Found something on the Net that looks suspiciously similar to the Queen Victoria medalette I found the other night but not the same.
It's an 1866 Hong Kong dollar but is silver, has a slightly different head and crown and is larger.....otherwise quite similar. Wondering if the Hong Kong dollar design was taken from this medalette...or vice-versa. The medalette has a blank reverse and is copper.

Anyhow, a very cool wee find. Hope to gain more info down the track. I love researching this kinda thing!

Ummmm....not being a coin collector as such, what does "pattern" mean in this context?
I'm guessing it has something to do with a test example of what the finished coin might look like?

Yup you got it, the engravers would make several different designs with the lucky one being massed produced.

Yours may have been smuggled out of the mint by an ex worker & worn as a necklace!! Ok bit of a wild story haha

I reckon theres a tie-up between the find and that design of the 1866 dollar-too similar to ignore!!

There's another to find and I'm gunna find it!

After a bit more research, it looks like it could be an 1870 Ceylon half cent. Still doesn't explain the blank reverse tho. Definitely not worn away as it is very slightly convex and no signs of a beaded edge. The true half cent was quite ornate with very strong reverse detail.
I still think coinnut could be onto something here..lol

A pattern design taken as a souvenir hence used as a lucky pendant...
Only one that exists and worth $250,000 USD....????? (just to 'wild up' the story a little more ,-)
There's another to find and I'm gunna find it!

There are a few features on the one with the hole that differ to the other.
Compare the V on Victoria, the attitude of the Tiara and the shape of the chin.
To me the top one is perhaps a fake.

Had a wee hunt last night with foiled again (cheers man) and scored this sweet little medallion, struck to commemorate the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall to NZ aboard the HMS Ophir in June, 1901.
The purpose of the trip was to thank the colonies for doing their duty to King and Country during the "successful" Boer War campaign.

Another cool little medalette for the collection!

Three hunts this weekend produced some damn nice finds and one very sweet bucket list tick.
The star find (and the tick) was the child's toy cannon. A brass toy from the late 1800's that actually worked.
Other fantastic finds included a fake lead/metal penny (thicker and heavier than a standard penny), and very grey in colour. Thought it was a large silver at first. Also dug three tokens (Edward Waters, HJ Hall and Hobday & Jobberns, a lead three ringer, a pocket watch key, an 1864 large copper penny, two 1875 Heaton mint pennies, fifteen silvers (all threepences) and $16 spendies.
One item is a mystery tho...its the small paddle shaped item. It says " Virginia Gold" on one side and has the star of David on the other. Virginia Gold was a tobacco brand back in the day. Any ideas what the item may have been used for? It's solid and quite heavy.

Hit my target of 300 silvers for the year with today's third dig.....WOOHOO!..... and with four months still to go.

GL & HH to all.
