Bit of a hunt today in an out of town spot, yielded a few really nice finds. Lots of kiwi clad and pennies but also six silvers including a three silver coin spill (two shillings and a sixpence), a cool old junk ring with a big cut-glass stone, two Aussie half pennies, a cute wee bell...and....an awesome old brass vesta case. Hoped maybe it's last owner had possibly used it to store a sovereign or two in...but no, it was empty....not even a vesta. Still, absolutely stoked to have found my first vesta case and to have had the added bonus of a silver coin spill. A great start to 2014 I reckon.
Happy hunting all.

Cool relic! Sigarette lighter case, is one of the finds i want to get ....

One think i want to check with you, when you say " Lots of kiwi clad " what type of coins are you referring to?
as CLAD coins are with multiple layers of metal , like our Steel coins plated by nickel-copper alloy : current 10&20&50 cents ,
while 1 & 2 $ coins are can not be called CLAD as they are solid alloy of Aluminum and Bronze

I think you watched too many USA based you tube videos, where they call their coins CLAD :-)) .. am i right? ;-)

Our old decimal were clad as are the pre-decimal after 1947.... they are copper nickel clad... It's cool if you electrolyse the clad you get copper half-crowns... lol

Yeah Max, nasty ole habit I've translated to my Kiwi slang for "the crappy stuff". Maybe I need a new, more kiwiana- type term.......how bout "weez n poos" (as in Brotown's periodic table, list of elements)?

Hi all, here's the result of two hunts this weekend. Went to an out of town domain on Saturday for an hour or two, and a local park today. Pretty stoked with the results. Ended up with seven silvers including two Aussie threepences and an 1880 sixpence. Also a cool old junk brooch with two green stones, a small pocket watch and a very large musket ball.
Happy hunting all.

Cheers for that coinnut. Yeah, she's a bloody big musket ball alright....about the size of a standard marble ( or fractionally bigger). Thought it was a sinker at first but has been mold-caste in two parts and does not have a hole through it. Also, it was found in an inland domain nowhere near water and was nearly 12 inches down!

Tonznz was in town tonight, so we hit South Hagley for an hour or two. As usual, the old girl had a few more wonderful old treasures to give. Five silvers including a 1906 Brit shilling, an 1891 sixpence and a very sharp 1934 NZ sixpence.....lost shortly after issue by the looks of it.
Other finds included a squashed thimble, a musket ball, a small NZ Forces button, a neat old "Fiat Lux star circle" badge and.....what I suspect to be, a very, very old enamel button. It was nearly 12 inches down in the oldest part of South Hagley....gotta be late 1800's I reckon. Stoked with tonight's little pot of treasure!
Happy hunting all.

Yeah Djevel, we're pretty blessed down here to have Hagley with all her 150+ years of history....and the freedom to carefully and respectfully roam her outer boundries for hidden booty.
I spent 22 years in the Auckland region, so can sympathise with you guys about the difficulty in finding great historical spots that haven't been "red taped". On the other hand, South Island beaches are crap. No one loses rings coz it's too cold to swim...even in summer!

Short hunt down at South Hagley last night, produced four silvers (1880,1892,1922 and 1944), a 1919 Aussie Penny and a very cool, early Christchurch manufacturing jeweler and watchmakers pocket watch key (Petersen and Co), in very nice condition. Also an old buckle, a small enamel school badge and a very old disc with the number "20" engraved into it from very deep down....deeper than most Victorian pennies I dig!

Very happy yet again with the performance of the Teknetics T2se. It's proving to be an excellent coin shooting and relic machine. I'm re-visiting ground that I had been over many times before with my old machine, and getting much deeper targets that the Delta just couldn't see. Well pleased.
Happy hunting all.

Hi coinnut, yeah spooky stuff. The only thing I can think of is that they could be time checks from a local factory of some kind. Back in Victorian times, when you signed into work, you put your employee tag (number) on a hook in the pay office. When you finished for the day, you removed it and took it home with you. Maybe that's what they are?
