Hi all. Had a 30 minute hunt yesterday afternoon at an old abandoned race course, out in the wops. Spoke to a local farmer a couple of weeks back and got a permission to detect on the inner circle of the old racetrack that is now only used as a sheep paddock. In that half hour, I scored two NZ threepence, one 1898 penny, one 1950 NZ half crown, a small base metal St Christopher badge.....and this ridiculously superb condition 1881 Milner and Thompson Christchurch Music Depot token. It was about 6" down in rock-hard dry ground. I think the superb condition is due to the fact that it was buried under, and protected by a fairly large stone for all those years.
Can't wait to get back and hit this spot again!

Happy hunting all.

Thanks for the advise there Roy. I think I'll be leaving it just as you see it in the pic's. There's enough detail showing from just the initial rub between thumb and forefinger for me to be happy with the clarity. Don't want to tempt fate by mucking around with it any further.

Cheers mate........yeah, it's strange the way these things seem to happen in two's and three's.
l0gic found a Navy League badge. I commented that it was absolutely identical to one that I had found the week before also in Hagley.....then another forum member said that they had found one also identical, not long ago in another town. Then, I was talking to Tonznz a week or so back, and he showed me a pic of .........yep, you guessed it.........the very same Navy League badge that he had recently dug in Dunedin!
Stranger than fiction sometimes mate..........spooky even!

Had a hunt at an out of town domain today in the drizzle. Amongst the pennies, kiwi clad and trash were six silvers, a very cool old Mickey Mouse pin badge and.....Woohoo!......a nice old 9ct rose gold Victorian ring. No hallmarks but judging by the belt buckle style, I would think its pretty old.
Looking forward to a few more hunts over the next couple of weeks.
Happy Happy hunting all.

Sweet finds, I like the live round and to here you had positive feedback from the public. I have just come back from Timaru and found the people very interested in what I was doing and friendly. One woman suggested we have a look below a bridge where she had had a dispute with her husband over him not buying her some strawberries, she tossed her wedding ring over the side! She told us the ring holds little sentimental value to her, so am guessing the marriage is all over.

Found a couple nice silver coin spills and a few other miscellaneous coins and bits and bobs, lots and lots of 308 (I think) empty shell casings in the park so not sure what the history is there.

Happy hunting

Man, so jealous of the goodies you guys get down there. I may be in the first european bit of NZ, but they all buggered off south too soon! What's left is all sewn up in Hysterical Places Trust.

There's a diamond ring near here waiting for me to pick up, which like Iggy, the original owner gave a hot tip as to where she threw it (an area 15x5m) and wished me luck :) Had a look and it's solid blackberry!!

Yeah....I feel pretty lucky to live in such a target rich environment. I live only about a K from South Hagley, so it's easy to get the kit ready and go for a spur-of-the-moment hunt........and usually score at least one sweet find.
Good luck with the blackberry vs diamond ring hunt. Might be worth investing in a nice sharp machete!
