Had a couple of evening hunts in the hills around Dunedin this week. Scored a few silvers including a 1902 half crown and a 9ct GOLD badge (Wooohoo!) Found both within about three metres of each other in dense bush, and a good 6-7 inches down. The wee badge was a very scratchy signal, bouncing around in the 60's on the T2se. The half crown however, was a very solid 92. Also scored my first snake buckle....yeehaa!.....and a nice 1921 brit florin.
Always fun and always rewarding hunting in Dunedin.

Cheers guys. Yeah, the florin is in real good nic. Haven't found any info about the badge as yet but will keep looking. It must be either school or sports related. I have a feeling that someone else on the forum from Dunedin has found one the same but in silver or base metal. Can't remember who ( not tonznz) but I'm sure there's a pic on a thread somewhere. The snake buckle is in really good nic too. It was my first dig on the first evening ,and I thought things couldn't get better than that.....but they did! It never ceases to amaze me what gets lost and forgotten. It's all there lads.....just waiting for us to find. Get out there and get into it!

Hey latch, what machine do you run? There's heaps of cool stuff out there to find, and the better you know your machine, the easier it seems to become in identifying the good targets from the crap.
Incidently, I bumped into jollyR (Hamhilton) when in Invercargill recently. Nice guy. He said he had hunted with you in Dunedin and had really enjoyed the time....lots of coin finds too. Maybe when I'm down Dunedin next, we could catch up for a hunt sometime?

Yeah...cheers creamer, it was a pretty special find alright. Something that's been on my detecting bucket list from day one.
Just out of curiosity, do you detect on the beaches around Russell? Years ago, I was a sales rep and part of my territory was the Bay Of Islands. I used to visit a couple of clients on the main street, then down to the main beach at Russell for lunch. Always seemed to find interesting bits and and pieces amongst the small stones on the high tide mark. I'd imagine that the whole of Russell township would be an amazing place to detect....with the correct permissions of course.

I have detected parts of Russell but found very little. Managed a penny or two under some foreshore trees and that was about it. About a month ago i had a buzz along Long Beach and found a couple of coins. The place is fairly historic, Im guessing if you lived there then more oportunity would arise as to where to go. Back over Piahia way is better.

Yay!......a three day weekend here in Canterbury, so managed to get a couple of hunts in. Went to a rural domain that I have successfully hunted in the past and once again, it didn't disappoint. The highlights were;
Six silvers including a 1918 Brit shilling, a six-penny coin spill including a 1921 Aussie penny, two NZ post bag seals, a silver plated buckle and spoon, an old junk ring still with a couple of old glass stones and a neat old black cat brooch.
A couple of very enjoyable hunts.

Happy hunting all.
