Lol Chris!
Well yesterday's hunt with poohbear turned up 5 silvers for me. Oldest a 1919 3d, got $7.50 spendies from about 65 coins.
Before meeting him tried a tiny park by my house for 30 mins and got 2 nz silvers a 925 ring and an extremely clean on one side 1866 penny- I think that's my oldest penny.

Just cleaning up this arvos hunt from a new location...a handful of silvers including an 1880 sixpence and also what I think is a 10carat GOLD chain bracelet with a lock...pic tomorrow!

Ooo nice they only minted 360,000 of a 1942 nice sixpence I got today.
Just cleaned up a couple if interesting bits..
What I think was a gold plated pocket watch key with 'W Good watchmaker and jeweller Gisborne.
A key for a windup triang toy.

good stuff! thsose live rounds would be dangerous in a playground with kids. Imagine the sh1t that would go down if they set one off with a rock or hammer etc! Might have to get out somewhere myself this week.....I've gotten bored with all my more local parks on this side of town.....might have to go poaching on the "dark" side.

Nice finds Jason. Good to see the before and after photos. The silvers have cleaned up well, are you using cloudy ammonia or something else?

Hi gjj, yea I use cloudy ammonia. The NZ silvers from parks generally clean up awesomely. Some of the old brit stuff just doesnt come up-you know,a bit blackened-maybe I need to soak some overnight. I usually chuck the silvers in the ammonia while i wash up everything else in some warm soapy water then when thats done give the silvers a scrub with a toothbrush and dry them off. Then sit there and go "sweeet silvers man!" lol

Hey one of you wise peeps out there might know...
The GOLD chain bracelet thing has 10ctld stamped on the locket...is that a cheap metal lined with GOLD or summink...??

Hi Foiled Again, nice finds m8.those little keys are very collectable.the triang key was for the minic range of clock work toys, made in the fortys and fifties. The toys were made from tin plate, and had rubber tyres and clockwork motors.
The pocket watch key should have a makers name on it,these are good finds.your silvers cleaned up really well, what did you use?,good luck on the next hunt.

For those that find old silvers at the beach, you could try heat from a butane torch or suchlike. I think that purple/black colour may be silver chloride. The butane torch changed the colour for me to a dull silver. If I held the heat on a bit longer it took on a yellowish sheen, which may be oxidation. I used the reducing part of the flame only. After that I tried silvo, but it didn't improve much. In the next few days I'm going to try various acids, electrolysis etc. Will let you know what I come up with.

Cheers
GN

Cheers for that info Steve , I thought they were cool pieces. The watch key does have the name 'W Good watchmaker and jeweller Gisborne'
My cloudy ammonia does the job well but I should prolly wear gloves as fingernails and fingers get stained dirty lol

Met up with a few boys for a hunt around Fendalton park last night. Thought it was worth another go over after scoring all denomination of silvers bar a crown the first time I went there.
Only managed a 1944 threepence this time round, although a few silvers were found between the group....

heres a pic of everything bar the caps/tabs/sprigs etc!

Yeah.....was a fun hunt last night. Real good to put a few more faces to forum nic-names too. Very reassuring to see that your "collection" was a pretty fair reflection of mine also. For me it was $3.40 in spendies, half dozen pennies (oldest 1901), two half pennies (1903 and 1917), a cog from a pocket watch, and about 50 million sprigs!.......no silvers darn it.

Met poohbear and chrispy for a look around lake Hagley tonight. Got there and found I forgot a digging apparatus. Dickhead! Anyway shot home and back hoping for something worth it after all that! No silver coins but a circa 1870 GL Heath cashel st penny token and a 925 signet ring with small garnet as best finds. One penny one half penny and $5.80 spendies. Not bad after all :-)
Got a serious need for a good hunt turning up a heap of silver coins! Perhaps tomorrow night!
Anyone know a silver mine handy???!!!
