Have any of you guys tried at Sydenham park or the old school diagonally across the road?
Lots of small parks around there.

Never been to Christchurch so don't know what it's like but has anyone considered water hunting in the Avon around Hagley? That would still be virgin ground & I bet it would contain some of those sovereigns!

Hi Guardian. Yea I went to Sydenham park once and got myself a few old coins and also my favourite silver ring from there! I was with Hunter and he scored an old gothic florin. It was the site of the first A & P shows in like the 1860's!
I heard a few guys were there one day and got told to move on so I havnt been again...
I did also do a wander around the site of that school but everything there is demolished and was concrete mainly so no good for detecting unfortunately

Thanks for the hurry up Shilo!!
Man thats exactly what Ive been thinking about for bloody ages but have never gotten round to it! Gotta be the place for good stuff tho for sure!
Gotta do the river and banks soon around the central city coz theyre guna revamp/change it all into one big long riverside reserve and I bet all the banks get re-done and all those treasures lost forever.

There's another to find and I'm gunna find it!

That is one cool/creepy ring, looks like an eye!

What!!! change the river, must be heaps of stuff where the punting left from (probably already thought of though I guess).
And around the Bridge of remembrance was a place that people liked to be involved in such activities that the thrill of potentially getting caught made for some very bad decisions... especially being so close to the old cop shop.

My old man used to say around the key hole at Jelly park was a busy place as apparently they used to have plays and such there, I couldn't see it on google maps though, was just a key hole shaped piece of land in the lake. I havn't been there for a good 20 years so I guess things may have changed.

Hehe not change the river, but create a wide riverside park that runs from (I think)the Antigua boatsheds all the way to Fitzgerald Ave. So I bet they "beautify" the banks by reshaping/resowing etc. Maybe I should get a job with the crew doing it...! I bet you're right about by the Bridge of Remembrance/The Strip area tho-Ive been keen on that for ages, the river there is a little deep in places but this is the time of year to avoid crowds too tho!
I havent heard about the key hole-Ive never been to Jellie Park as I thought it was a modernish place and I like the allure of old haunts haha

I had a chat with a couple of council workers a few months back who were wanderin up the middle of the avon just down from the boat shed. asked wheat they were doing and they said they were dredging for rubbish etc. I asked if they ever find anything cool and he said they are always finding rings, both gold and silver and lots of coins but mainly only new stuff. there is about a foot or so of mud before you hit solid bearing but they only dredge the top inch or so. he reckoned anything old would still be down there. im in the process of making a foot scoop on a pole so I don't have to bend over or go swimming lol.

a couple of years back I worked in chch as a geotec engineer (haven't always chased opposums) so I got to know the soils of the city quite well

try looking in a park in strickland street Somerfield on the NE side of the road half way down
there used to be a punting lake there round the 1900s it was filled in so not to sure where for sure it was but some of the area does face problems with building foundations due to the soft soils in the area
I would suggest asking at the council etc for the location maybe people fell out of their punts don't know

don't forget around ferrymead the old wharf site

So many places that have gone, been filled in and built on. My dad used to talk about swimming at Lake Bryndwr. It was filled in and was going to be a drive in movie theater (how cool would have that been!) didn't happen and is now that newish subdivision Westpark I think it's called.

Thats pretty interesting chrispy! I cant wait to wade in the water!
Kiwikeith-I have been to that park 2 or 3 times..Bradford Park-yep was a shingle quarry on a dudes land then yea he made a big lake which Ive seen a photo of. Was turned into a park in the 1930's or so I believe. Was ok for a few silvers but not heaps there. And after reading about tonznz and the mudlarking he got up to, I did a visit to the ferrymead mudflats area but no luck whatsoever haha.
Guardian, my grandma use to live a coupla minutes walk fom that place and I do remember the talk about a drive in movie place!! With progress, it makes you realise how much treasure bearing land gets filled and lost to us.

Thought I better get a hunt in tonight as I dont think Ill be able to get out again for a bit, so off to Hagley park again-this time near the hospital corner-my favourite part-just seems so old and untouched. Was guna stay for ages but some drizzle rolled in so called it quits after about 90 mins but had my quota so happy as.
Best finds were three silver coins, a pretty good 1875 Penny and also a first for me, a buckle ring-just copper or bronze or whatever they are. Majorly flattened years ago!

Yeah, the park you mention in Somerfield is Bradford Park. I've seen old photo's of a small jetty and boating on what was a small lake back in the day. It was filled in, back in the 1920's I think with mostly a mix of soil, rubble and general rubbish. I've tried detecting it but it's real hard going due to the amount of trash and iron. Had a few silvers and pennies from around the edges but nothing really old.

Can't beat the Hospital corner I reckon. Still seems to be plenty of good stuff there amongst the trash if you take it slowly. Love the buckle ring. Never seen one of those before..........very cool.

Out braving the dark cold wetlands of Hagley last night with coinnut for company.
Ice on the ground, ice forming on the coil...!
Fell short in my target of two silver coins, however stoked to get the shilling.
Lots of odds n sods, best of's are;
1953/54 Royal visit medallion
1901 Duke & Duchess Cornwall visit souvenir
A few 1800's halfpennies incl Heaton mint
1886 penny
Two Florins-alas non silver! Grr!!
Quite interesting (I'll look this up) is a solid heavy metal disc with "Black & White Whisky" on it. It has two holes one on each 'side' so looks to be perhaps a bottle top with a metal flip hinge thing like on a Grolsch.

Off to New Brighton beach tonight to find that treasure hoard!!

There's another to find and I'm gunna find it!
