I did indeed. Found two florins yesterday but they are not silver. A 47 and a 48.

#70 Trip. A 50k round trip

It is a 50 k round trip to my new spot so i havent been there alot lately. Only a tiny area near a boat ramp with plenty of potential. I am amazed at just how much i have found here. When i said that i was going to dig everything i sure did. Went into jewelry mode and dug every hit regardless of its signal strength or depth or whether i knew it was foil or not. With the ace you just never know sometimes. 26 coins all up, 5 silvers and a .925 ring.

Me too Mineforgold, A GOLD sovn perhaps.. This is my 3rd or 4th trip here and my plan is to dig every signal from this spot. For such a small spot that it is, it is turning out to be very rewarding. I found my 1834 coin here and im sure there must be more. Only way to find out is to clean the place out by digging everything. May take some time.

What are the copper nails from Shane - they look like the nails used to nail on the copper sheet sheafing on the hulls of sailing ships to stop worms eating the wood which was a big problem in some parts of the world...were there any shipwrecks near where you found them - could always sell them as genuine relics of Cooks Endeavour!

I was just sorting through them funny enough deciding what to do with them. They were found near an old boat ramp/beach area. I have plenty of these and others like it. I often wonder where these brass nails and rivets come from.

Add them to your copper scrap. Over a year it would add up to good $
Probably left by people doing boat repairs on the beach over the years.

This is a pic of my more''precious'' copper finds. The big nail was found at the site, the hook type nail i cant remember rightly, the rivets and lead washers near a boat ramp and a piece of copper sheeting which litters the old beach/boatramp sites.

If you find the type of nail I have included the photos of here then they are definitely sheathing nails used to hold on the copper sheathing on sailing ships - when I compare yours I do note that the sharp end of some of yours are burred and so must assume that they were used on small craft to hold the planking on and burred on the inside where they protruded. The big long one of yours is definitely one used for planks.

The nails I have here were from the ship which can be seen in the photograph I think but if not then from a similar sized vessel. They are only 30mm long, flat head as can be seen, round shank up at the head end becoming square where the taper begins.

I have always assumed that square copper nails were from boats, is this correct or are they also used for other applications?

Yes they will be boat nails but there are different boat nails for different applications - the ones I showed are sheathing nails and the longer ones are planking nails and of course they come in all sizes depending on the width of the timber - I have always liked the square shanked ship and boat nails and seemed to have hoarded them at one stage 'just in case' I made a clinker built boat - one of those dreams I get now and again and which will probably get put off until the next reincarnation.
