show, tell and identify = tick.

fishing sinker or loom weight ?
if it's a loom weight, i've got a lot of research to do.
local flax mill, or milling imported cotton off the boats ...
good luck everyone. mickey

Oooww....tough call. With what site context do you consider the possibility of these being loom weights? I assume you have some pretty concrete knowledge of the area/vicinity of the finds to reach that possible conclusion? They most certainly look like (from the ones I've seen on YouTube) and could well be loom weights. Have you seen anything else out of the ground nearby, such as bale seals, brass bearings or other brass machinery bits that may indicate a mill of some sort? I'd be hunting the area a bit more yet for some of these other indicators before I made the call.
Good luck with the research though. Would be really cool if it was a flax mill site.

cheer no.8,
find site was at an elevated 1918 monument site at the end of the Cornwallis peninsula.
[north shore of the Manukau harbour]
a little removed from the kauri-mill sites along that coast.
so, doubtful that the find-site was a flax-mill, no other relics, as you say.
still.
could there have been flax milling going on along that coast?
hence the horror = not knowing enough about it.
good luck.

cap badge.
HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE
British, not sure of regiment.
George V, WW1. (?)
site was 1900's house site, totally re-grown into bush.
house collapsed 1930's.
heaps of lead-heads, a couple of pennies, but no silver.
might have to go back for another look.
good luck everyone.
mickey

[edit]
looks like it's horse brass rather than cap badge.

"
An original Martingale -horse brass. With the cypher for Queen Victoria (VR). Several British Army regiments used this motto of the Order of the Garter, including the Royal Horse Artillery, Grenadier Guards , Royal Regiment of Fusiliers , Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment , Life Guards and the Blues and Royals . The Canadian Grenadier Guards , The Royal Regiment of Canada , The Royal Montreal Regiment and New Zealand's 6th Hauraki Infantry Regiment also use it as their mottos.

Some very nice finds there Mickey, I love finding leadheads in the undergrowth - where there's smoke and all that....

As for the loom weight, my wife (who currently fills the house with 4 large floor looms and a small flocks-worth of wool) says unlikely.

"Loom weights are associated with primitive vertical warp-weighted looms, the "modern western-style" looms would have been more likely to have been used. Flax mills were primary processing, and unlikely that looms would have been used there, with the fibre being shipped out for finishing."

As someone who gets excited by scraps of shaggy textiles dug up on Time Team, she calls "fishing weight", and I won't argue with her :)

thanks for feedback Mudwiggle.
wouldn't disagree with any of that expert knowledge.
not come across any record of a 'processing' or 'finishing' flax mill out here.
probably a cunning home-made sinker.
happy hunting amigo.

That's a cool find, I found one similar last week, but missing the top crown bit, its the order of the garter badge, mine was a horse rosette of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry dated late 1800s to early 1900s
If you go to www.nzmhs.org.nz and send a email with the photo they will be able to tell you all about it.

jewellery stash.

surface find on a 1930's demolished shanty bush site.
but obviously a stash from the 1960s (?)
pouch and ring case placed in an army munitions box.

9ct cygnet ring & cufflinks,
[edit : hallmark on gold ring birmingham 1852?]
925 rings, chains, earrings, bangle.
stainless swiss watch 'delma'.

not sure if this is the result of a burglary (?)
definitely some very dubious strangeness anyhow.

good luck every-one.

Wow, what an interesting assortment of gold and silver. Most of the good silver jewelry looks 1930's. Is the signet ring hallmarked? Very odd to see the watch in with that lot. Deffo gives the impression of a small local "heist" back In the day I'm thinking.
