R.O.R. gilded buckle.
from 1880's+ site.
military(?), seems a bit ornate.
can't match name to any regiment.
best guess is Otago Rifles,
but what it would be doing up here, dunno.
happy hunting, mickey.

First thing that springs to mind for me is the Boer War NZ contingent called "Rough Riders". They had regiments from all over NZ....including an Otago one. Food for thought......

More from 1860-1880 site.

Brass lid or hinged cover to a jug or bottle I think?
Could be an ostrich or emu, but I reckon Moa.

65th Regiment tunic button.

Gilded Brooch shaped like a shell.

Hey Micky , just love that 65th regiment button. Great history with the 65th regiment in the Waikato region during the Maori land Wars. The 65th were known by Maori as the "hickety-pips" because local Maori dialect made it difficult to pronounce sixty-fifth. They were lead by General Cameron and were generally based in and around the Waikato region...base camp being the Alexandria Redoubt, strategically placed on a hilltop above the mighty Waikato river. As a fighting unit, they certainly saw plenty of action during these turbulent times.

Stunning find mate with some very important historical NZ land war significance.

Many years ago as a kid, I lived up that way. I visited the Alexandria Redoubt during a school holiday and was playing near an eroded cliff when I spotted an old brass button sticking out of the clay bank. Long story short, it turned out to be a 65th regiment commissariat star....commissariat being the regiment's cooking crew!
I still have that button in my collection today.
