hi no8,
no trace of gilt. must be brass/bronze. bushmans variety i reckon.
a real fancy pocket watch would have had makers marks on the winder as well i guess.
surprised they don't get found more often, what a pain having to carry one around all the time.
i guess the jewellers would have sold replacement winders as well.
good luck everyone.
mickey.

Well done Mickey, I'm on the other side of the Harbour but spend most spare time on the East Coast. Maybe I should stay closer to home. Are the beaches on the "other side " very muddy. I'm wondering if thats helping preserve the coins

That's the biggest silver haul I have seen in Auckland for a while.
Got me wondering which beach for sure. ;-)

hi marty,
re: muddy,
i'm more turf than surf, but from what i can tell over this side [north],
the beaches and mudflats have lost quite a bit of mud and sand deposit this winter.
this is however not true everywhere, because in patches, say around a bluff, or in a sheltered bay,
the mud will be as thick as usual.
generally the silvers have come off the beach, maybe only 5% from out in the mud.
the ones found in the mud are in better nick though generally, especially if they are in that black slimey 'de-oxygenated' layer.
the change in deposit levels is a weird thing. not sure what could cause it.
can't really be wave action as it seems minimal, maybe on a windy high tide.
my guess is it's more down to the way the various & varying channels of the harbour push the in-coming & out-going tides against the shoreline.
all the best
good luck everyone.
mickey.

manukau harbour. [still there]

58th Regiment badge.
badge is certainly old, 1850's old.
the drop date, hmm, not too sure.
same beach as all the silvers.
the whole coastline was 'manned' against an attack from the south, so who knows.
suggestions on cleaning welcome. soak in oil for 2-3 years?

The main part of the Regiment arrived Auckland in April, 1845, and took part in the fighting at Okaihau, Ohaeawai, Ruapekapeka, Boulcott's Farm, Horokiri, and St. John's Wood. The 58th left New Zealand in November, 1858. Over 300 officers and men elected to settle permanently in New Zealand.

Silver
young head reads 188-.

good luck every-one.

Have to disagree with Roy.

This has been in the Manukau mud(?) for around 150 years. Highly likely to have suffered de-zincing from the saline as well as copper decay from the sulphides in the mud.
Likely to be very brittle, and last thing you want to have is two pieces of a 58th badge.

Personally, I'd definitely be leaving as is.
