Those foreign coins are awesome! The age and variety is incredible! Makes the 1 and 2 cent pieces I've been finding seem even more boring than they already are!

Across the bay for a 2 hour buzz and i found the largest piece of this blue rock i have found yet. Found whilst digging for a target. Thru a loupe you can clearly see the whole rock is loaded with blue crystals and dotted with rich black type crystals. We have found them before but nothing like this. We dont know what they are as yet. How exciting.
7 coins all up and a blue rock.

Trip # 127

Met up with Crisyboy to the latest old time spot at a very cold time of the morning.. Best finds were coins and a .925 silver barbed wire style ring;
1904 French copper coin.
1930 USA Indian head, 5 cent buffalo nickel.
1933 NZ silver threepence.
1944 Cyprus 1/2 peastre

Approx 15 goldies, 30 odd coins all up and a silver ring.

My wife and i think it could be Canvansite which is mined at the Aranga Quarry, Aranga, Northland which I assume is near you. The piece I saw was just like the little blue crystals you have there.
Does that make sense/help?

Here's a piece we are selling on Trademe but it's not from NZ.....

Scratch one of the blue crystals with a needle (Moh's scale of hardness = 7). If it scratches very easily then it could be Cavansite (Moh's scale of 3-4), if it barely scratches then it could be something like Benitoite (Moh's 6). Both minerals are found in serpentine which is found in patches up there.

due to the area and there is serpentine and a shiyst
type rock its not canvansite,i thought it was sodalite
from the first piece but looking at more pieces it mostly
looks like benitoite i really hope it is.benitoite is among
the ten most rare gemstones in the world?
the black crystals look like neptunite,
the white crystals look like natrolite,
and the shades of blue look as if its benitoite
there would be no other rock with that matrix?
will be definatly looking into this one.

A few more pics of the blue rock. I believe its some kind of (blue crystals) Benitoite and (black crystals) Neptunite. They find pieces in america and they are worth big bucks.

Shane I seem to remember stones something like that coming out of the fertilizer way back when the govt. block farms were being aerial top dressed. Could be wrong as it is a wee while ago now. Fertilizer used to come up to the Stone Store buy barge and scow to be trucked away. Don't know whether any barges were off loaded in the area where you found the rocks.

Have you done the needle test like Shilo described?
That is one of the most common ways to identify rocks/gems.
Our supplier also thinks it is Cavansite(not canvansite like I previously wrote). Either way it's a great find! :)

Gave the best piece a good hard scraping with a pin and it didnt scratch. Solid blue stone.

Ok, that removes Cavansite as a hardness of 3-4 is the same as calcite and would have been easily scratched with a pin. This still doesn't mean it is Benitoite because it could be another blue crystal of the same hardness but the possibility is now greater that it was before.

Next tests to verify is to take a look at the right hand column on Wikipedia and check out its luster and streak. Also if you can get you hands on a UV light to see if it glows. If it all checks out then track down the source and try to find some larger crystals! :-)
