Yeah.....I was pretty surprised to dig another one too..........just goes to show, you never know what's next........trash or treasure. I'd also have to say that I was pretty bloody stoked to lift that sixpence cufflink. It's a beautifully crafted wee piece of Victoriana and no doubt was created to remind it's owner of the good old Motherland!...... I like to think that maybe it was the farewell gift of a Mother to her son as he left England on his great Antipodean adventure to the far flung colonies.
I've never seen one like it before, other than the modern reproduction ones you can buy online......... It also shows the measure of having an exceptionally good, compatible coil for your machine.
The new Teknetics 11" DD that I bought recently, has proven to be extremely sensitive and accurate in depth indication, locating small silvers (threepence) at up to 10 inches!.

Hi all. Had time for an hour and a half hunt this morning at South Hagley, before being snagged by the wife for domestic duties around the house. Got a 1933 NZ threepence, a 1933 NZ shilling, a 1939 NZ sixpence and two Brit sixpence (1880 and 1919).
Also dug my first Returned Services Association badge. I've looked up the service number on the Cenotaph database but there is no record of this chap on there.
Does anyone know another way of tracking this number/soldier down via the Net? I'm guessing he was a WW1 veteran, as other numbers around his (his being NZ 43288) are all First World War. The number inside the crown looks like "50"............what does this indicate?

Nice going! I have exactly the same rss badge with a 50 on the top. It might be the years of membership? Mine has two numbers on the back- 1140 & 3610
There's another to find and I'm gunna find it!

Yeah Jason, you may be right about the years of membership...........makes sense as there wasn't an NZ 50th Battalion or regiment as far as I know. Have you tried tracking these numbers on the Cenotaph database? I'm guessing that maybe your soldier was a veteran of both 1st and 2nd World Wars, or even Boer and 1st WW.

Thanks for the tip on this poohbear. I gave it a try but still no luck. There are a couple of entries with 6/3288 and 8/3288 but no 4/3288 bugger it! I might try emailing the RSA directly and see what happens.

I found a small crown badge which looks the same as crown on this badge. It has a little bit of red enamel on it and looked like it clipped on.

Cheers MM.

Two hours this afternoon at Hagley with Roy, produced two pennies, two half pennies and a few decimals. Also a 1945 NZ threepence, a Brit 1918 sixpence, a Brit 1919 shilling and an Enfield bullet (fired) circa 1860/70. Happy hunting all.

Was just emptying the bottle caps and pull tabs out of my pocket when I found what looked like a piece of rolled up aluminum. Out of curiosity, opened it up and reveled a hallmark!
Absolutely no idea what it is/was but the hallmark and date letter revel that it the Birmingham assay office, 1911. I haven't yet managed to track the maker but the letters are " A.F. & Co". Also, in a diamond pattern above this, are the letters "BBB". Any ideas welcomed.

Just found out what it most likely is.

PIPE MOUNTERS
SILVER HALLMARKS-

A pipe for tobacco smoking typically consists of a small chamber (the bowl) for the combustion of the tobacco to be smoked and a thin stem (shank) that ends in a mouthpiece (the bit).
The stem needs a long channel of constant position and diameter running through it, and this is difficult to carve out of a pre-existing block. Because it is molded rather than carved, clay may make up the entire pipe or just the bowl, but most other materials have stems made separately and detachable.
Often a silver band is used to connect the bowl to the detachable stem. In the UK, sterling silver spigots (or ferrules) bear Assay Office's hallmarks which allow to date the pipes and obtain information about their maker, mounter or importer.

....and the maker is Adolph FRANKAU & CO LTD - London.

Ok......my subtitle says it all......"The RSA badge dead end search"

I had no luck contacting the RSA directly but they put me on to the Personnel Archives at Trentham Military Camp. This is their reply;

"SUBJECT: Confirmation of owner of RSA Badge - NZ 43288

Thank you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately, as with past enquiries received of this nature, NZDF Archives cannot correctly identify the owners of RSA badges.

It appears that if the number is not RSA issued, then we cannot confirm if it pertains to an individuals NZ Defence Force service number.

The reason for this is because, as in some partiuclar instances, the number has been issued to more than one individual servicemen.

Issue of RSA badges are not recorded in service files, so we cannot confirm if that particular serviceman had been issued one or not.

Regret that we cannot be of further assistance to you with this enquiry".

Bugger.........it would have been great to have been able to find out a bit about the soldier to which it was issued. Them's the breaks I guess.
