Yeah, most of the coins were from the small hill above the domain. Obviously no one has ever thought to hunt up there before. It's a small forested plateau overlooking the domain. You could imagine people climbing the hill to sit and look down on the"events"... which I guess is what must have happened.

Here endeth the lesson!

This is one of the big "secrets" as to why No.8, Erickd & Co. pull so much out of the dirt. They know not to see it as it is now, but what it was then.

Lol got it in one mudwiggle..those big old pines boardering big old domains weren't there 100 plus years ago, and look at where the suns positioned at those hot times of the day and think where the most likely spot would be to view that game of cricket so your not blinded by the sun and your cucumber club sandwiches not making the bread soggy

Check out this cool old sterling silver "B" that I dug this morning.
Petersen & Co is New Zealand's oldest manufacturing jeweller founded in the 1860's , and is still retailing jewellery today.
This was a good 8" down, so must be a fairly early piece.

Thanks MK. I'm pretty sure it was lapel pin badge. It has a small raised hole in a blob of silver on the back that probably held a pin in place.
A bit surprised it doesn't have any hallmarks though....but I guess if it was made here in Victorian Christchurch , a hallmark wouldn't necessary be important to have on your goods. As long as your name was on it as the silversmith, that would have been all that mattered I guess.

Spent the weekend on a road trip with Erickd and Chrispy...cheers guys, had a blast!
We hunted around Greymouth and Hokitika with very little luck overall. We figure that because of the large amount of rainfall in combination with very sandy soil, that silver and gold tends to sink very quickly, well beyond reach of the detector. We hit close to a dozen parks and domains and all were devoid of decent finds. Digging $2 coins and tear tabs at 7-9 inches pretty- much proves that theory I reckon.
Anyway, back to Canterbury this arvo.....to a spot that seems to produce something every hunt.....and it did not disappoint this time either.
A sweet 1836 William IV half crown in great condition. My oldest half crown to date....stoked!

Awesome stuff man!! I'd luv to find any William IV coinage. Really like the photo too you can clearly see the initials W.W. I rekon you've got yourself the scarcer 1836/5 overdate.

Just had a look online at a couple of examples of overdate 1836 half crowns. The "6" on my coin looks like a traditional calligraphy "6" to me. The top of the overdate example looks like the flat top of a "5" in the ones I saw online, therefore I think mine is just the standard 1836 coin.
Cheers for your thoughts on this though mate....appreciated.

Thanks Roy, no not stock saleyards....another place where people and animals meet......this particular one was established in the late 1860's but was abandoned for this purpose in the 1930's. It continued on in use for another "sport" until the late1950's then it was returned to pasture........
It's a very cool, unassuming spot with a little known but fascinating history. ; )

Credit must go to Erickd for his fantastic research skills in locating this spot.
