Good finds. I have found probably a dozen pocket watches and none of them were anywhere near as nice as that one. Having the key with it is cool too.

Nice work mate and congrats on your two "firsts". I thought it was you I saw at N/Hagley as I was driving passed on Sunday. The pocket watch is a stunner........what a great find, and still with the key! Nice work mate.

It would be interesting to know the age of the pocket watch and the actual composition of the face. It would appear to pre-date the mass production of plastics.

The face will be enamel on brass which was usual in them there days. As for age I really have no idea but at a guess WWII or slightly before and maybe earlier around WWI era.

definatly enamel over copper face. i cant seem to find a makers name but inside the back has wee oval with Pure Nickel with a fancy M in the middle. on the inside workings it has Non Magnetic 7 Jewels and swiss made. it definatly ages around very early 1900s when compared to similar watches. wouldve probably had makers name on enamel face but seems to be missing.

I love the heater - I daresay it shot many Indians and 'Baddies' before its owner got shot in return, lost his shooter and had to be consolled by his mum!
Dates from the 1950s I think

went out for a wee hunt this arvo at hagley. few 1 & 2 cent coins, couple of nz pennys and this crazy old medal.
turns out to be a "UNITED LABOUR 1890 GRAND NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION" medal from new south wales
Australia. minted in 1890. has a wee sleeved hole for hanging it off some thing. think it has some thing to do with there first labour day holiday but not sure who received these tho.

Judging by the number of shooters which have been found by metal detectorists it is quite apparent that many wars must have been fought over the village green, local park and associated playgrounds and many deaths gone unrecorded. I daresay that in the future politically correct Archaeologists will conclude that the great wars of the 20th Century were all caused by misguided youth raised by evil parents to do evil deeds to one another and that the number of cap guns found clearly indicates the violent upbringing and the manner in which youngsters were encouraged to kill each other....today of course it is violent films and X Box games.

I still think it was much more fun being heavily armed with my LONE STAR cap gun blasting the enemy to oblivion and when the caps ran out clod grenades ruled supreme.

By mid high school age the standard weapons of warfare for a small group of us was one genuine German MG 08 Machine gun into the water jacket of which we put strings of crackers, A Stevens favorite rifle, a genuine 1849 Colt revolver loaded with Black powder and potato bullets - and yes we did shoot it at each other plus hand grenades made of shotgun shells filled with touch powder and a small stone to give them weight.

I noted one of our forum members showed me a marvellous cap gun which was made about 1956 and lasted only a year as they were withdrawn due to the ingenuous use of them to fire a .22 short bullet and being of die caste alloy that was a dangerous act to do - in any case these things were to me the most marvellous cap gun that god in his infinite wisdom allowed man to create as a small component could be taken out of the centre of the cylinder, rammed into a spud then placed back in the cylinder - the gun closed and a cap placed on the back...or in my case several caps with a rubber band to give the hammer spring more power. When it went off with a loud bang the potato bullet could actually inflict quite a nasty welt and leave a purple bruise...my grandmother in her infinite wisdom confiscated it and I have never been the same since - a very tragic day in my life! I found that when the enemy were shot dead with it they had no cause to deny the fact as the big bruise of the spud bullet was ample proof of an accurate shot.
