They are all the tiny coloured rocks i pick up when detecting. Mainly from the beachs. If i look at it twice, i put it in my pouch.

Yeah I am a bit like that too.
I tend to pick up rocks when away on holiday as well.

A molten piece of lead to be exact (Re:Shanes Stuff. Post #93), blackened nicely by time. My favorite at the moment. It seems to have gone black like the silver coins do after a very long time.

Hi there Rgmcbrid. Whether it be GOLD silver or lead, some finds stand out more than others. This find is paticularly unique in the fact that it looks unusual, an offbeat irregular find. Not far from it i found an 1835 sixpence. 50k away on the other side of town i picked up an 1834.

You hav eme really interested in tyhe piece of lead for no other reason than the fact that I just happen tolike answers - the question being just what is the black coating and how did it get there - lead oxidation causes it to go white and the white coating scrapes off as white powder, association with iron gives it a brown coating of iron oxides but black I dont know.

Somewhere hidden away I have a book or series of books called 'Chemists Receipts' dating from the 1870s or 1880s and it gives recipes for blackening bronze, copper and so on as well as giving different colours to other metals eg bluing for guns, browning for steel etc etc so if I can find these books one day I will see if and what it says about blackening lead but for your piece to be blackened one would thing that it was a cast shape like a toy soldier etc.

Yes I had been wondering about the "black" too as every piece of lead I have dug up has either still been grey or oxidized white as you say. Curious as it looks as though this piece has been heated at some time.

Hmmmm. Don't s'pose Shane has blackened it in time to get us all going? Nah he wouldn't do that eh. :-)

My guess would be lead sulphide.

IMHO Oroplata has it. If the lead aged where there is oxygen it would turn white over time, but if it was in a low oxygen environment (swampy area, mud flats etc) then it will turn black from the sulphide. I've dug a up quite a few black sinkers laying alongside 1940's rings and coins from a beach where the sand was slimy and stunk - no oxygen. Over the years erosion and wave action could have moved the lead from such a place and put it on top or amongst normal sand again.

...ask the Leyland, ask the Leyland, ask the the Leyland brothers.

If there ever was an icon that we could look up too it would have to be Mike and Mell, the Leyland brothers. Two australian outback explorers who would go anywhere and everywhere to find a great story or unexplored terrain.

The blackened piece of lead. No explanation as to its colouring. It was found on a beach underneath shell and rock with not much sand present. Lying in the brownish coloured beach dirt. The unusual shape suggests that it may have been shaped this way purposely or that it didnt turn out to be what the maker intended it to be. Or that it simply took this shape naturally in its travels. Why is it black, hard to say. Possibly it was blackened by a fire or some sort of colouring process. Personally i think that it has gone this way like silver does after a long time and naturally darkened.
The 1835 sixpence i found close by had also blackened from time. This is the only referance i have as to its state.

Sulphur.

http://www.uniclectica.com/conserva/silver1.html

Quote:
The dark purple-blue-black silver tarnish that most of us are familiar with occurs when the outer layer of silver reacts with sulphur. This sulphur can come from a variety of sources, including: from one's hands, from storing or displaying the silver near objects or substances that give off sulphur, and from the air around us (air pollution)...

Tarnish is not always bad. When it isn't bad, it's called "patina". Patina good.

Most interesting and I must remember this page exists and 'give it a go' - I am going to disguise all my lead sinkers so the fish dont see them!

Seriously though I found those compounds interesting and am now quite keen to give them a go - I am now certain that there will be recipes for blackening Lead in my old Chemical Receipt books so must get them out - it isnt a case of going to the book case as they are down behind this crap - at least I know where they are and thats only one corner of one room!
