Hi all,

Anyone use a pin-pointer? If so... any advice / recommendations / links you can share. Been playing with the idea of getting one as it'll probably make finding those smaller nuggets a little easier!

Cheers,
Gavin

I have one of the Fisher pin pointers which are an inexpensive no frills unit. I really don’t use it that much unless it is dark. This is largely because my detector pinpoints really well. Shallow $1 coins for example I can locate and flick out with the knife without digging. If something is still in the hole the detector pretty accurately tells me where in the hole it is, although I try not to have to pinpoint a target twice and when I do I don’t bother standing back up. The pin pointer just seems to be an extra step that slows me down. Having said that I do occasionally chase something around for a while and wish I had it with me. Mine would not be of any use on little nuggets, pretty much have to touch a 1 cent to get it to register. I would be interested in trying a high end model sometime to see if they are worth the effort.

I have been really pleased with my Garrett Pro Pointer.
Fast and robust with the directional feature a bonus.

I also use a Garrett Pro-pointer. Wouldn't go detecting without it now.

Also, there is a little trick you can do to gain extra depth with the pro-pointer ...

Cheers guys - much appreciated. The Garrett Pro Pointer looks like the better option so far as don't need to touch the item. Anyone know how well it does with sub-gram nuggets? Still pinpoints them ok?

The smaller the object is, the closer you have to get to it before the pin-pointer sounds off, in my experience.

Your welcome to test my pin-pointer out on some of your gold sometime if ya like.

Cheers for the offer - much appreciated. I'll give you a shout in a few weeks... bit out of action at the mo, at home recovering from some re-constructive wrist surgery (more inconvenient not being able to use right hand rather than painful). And then in a few weeks time we're moving out of the red zone to North New Brighton so I can add tsunamis to my list of worries :P So pretty tied up for now.

Again - thanks :)

about 20 years ago a fiend of mine in timaru had a thing like a long rod that you pushed into the ground even under water when it touched gold it sounded went down to caraline bay found a ring the only thing was it had to touch it
he used to get gold that was so fine like 1mm across would be good for up the claim in the small cracks
cant remember much about it, names etc

Hi Keith - it is funny you mentioning the long rod thing in Timaru as I had an elderly friend in Waimate who talked about them back in the 1970s. He read about them in the Pix magazine I think. Back then there were a lot of articles on the new gold finds being made with Garrett Deepseekers and Whites 6000 metal detectors which had just come on the market and were making some fabulous finds in Australia thus beginning the metal detector boom...the gold find articles and the Ned and his Neddy cartoons made the Pix well worth reading...not to mention some of the scantily clad shielas.

I cant find any reference ot them on the internet so I guess they didnt get widely accepted.

My old friend showed me an article about this revolutionary new device which was basically a rod which when pushed into the ground would detect the smallest pieces of gold...at the time they sounded too good to be true and I never made any further enquiries about them and never saw one. I do know that there was a bloke in Timaru who went to the outback in Aussie with his wife, was pointed in a certain direction by the locals out there and did apparently strike it rich finding a quartz reef from which he filled a 44 gallon drum with rich specimen stone but that was about forty years ago now.

Something to consider is that it would probably go off on magnetite/hematite ironstones also. This could be a pain if you're thinking of using it where you were on your last trip.

Interesting... hadn't thought of that! I'll be sure to take a tub of black sand when I pop around to try Ash_T's out ;)

Hi Gavin

http://forums.paydirt.co...0p2_Finally-Got-one.aspx
a few others pointed me in the right direction.

I just got the Garrett Pro Pointer AWESOME for coins/rings I tried it in plugs I had given up with and found the target/s very quickly. It's not so good on the small nuggets (I'm not sure of weights but can find out).

The Pistol Probe has better depth but doesn't look as tough and to be honest if you dig tight plugs it's harder to find the target as if the target is in the wall of the hole you might think you need to dig deeper. I'm a newbie but learnt that one pretty quick.

Wrist surgery eh? Don't tell us why you needed it - probably too much information :)

I'm looking at getting a propointer - it can really shorten the time taken to recover a target and also reduce the amount of earth needed to be shifted around.

Would love to try one out first if anyone in CHCH has one.

I use a Garrett security wand right now - all I could get at the time, but it sure helps. People just look at you funny (Even funnier than they look at guys carrying around metal detectors)

i have heard the garrets are the good ones

more important i reckon, is a rare earth magnet on the end of your pick
most of those really hard to find small targets that we waist time finding are ferrous, it sure saves heaps of time when youve dug your junk out of the hole to turn your pick around and that piece of trash gets attached to the magnet.

i would recommend you get that first, mind you, one needs to be very carefull how you transport those suckers, when they get stuck to the car body in you boot they are devil to get off!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Random true story !
Had my first encounter with a bad tempered staffy today.
In a moment of panic I pulled out my trusty pro pointer (md was on the ground) - thinking better the pointer than my arm
turned it on and to my surprise the beeps were enough to make the dog stop in it's tracks.
Is this a solid reason to buy a garrett pro pointer - no, could this be used by garrett in there marketing of their pro-pointer - probably not.
But who knows a future version might just have a dog repellent built in also!

Just another reason to never go out hunting without one!

lmao...a good swinging detector and a readyed lesche knife work also...i had a pitbull type looking dog charge at me...had my knife in one hand and swung my detector at it's head with my other and it turned and ran...then his owner come around the corner so i told him in no uncertain terms to put his so and so dog on a leash because if it comes at me again i will kill it.....Im not normally cruel to animals..but after being attacked by 3 dogs at once i now have a fear of them and wouldnt hesitate to sink my knife into one if it charges and gets to close.
