I am about to lay out some cash for a Garrett Pro Pointer. While doing the research I came across this video that is a bit worrying with the Pro Pointer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkXYsE4uRBE

I tend to feel this is a one off and surely Garrett would have fixed this if it is a problem. So maybe any owners out there could test theirs and set my mind at rest.

Hi lifejockey I use a pro pointer and it saves a lot of digging a great tool for detecting I need to have mine in a metal cover as the 4500 picks up signals from it even when it is turned off i would not be without it. Bill

Hi Bill,

Yeah I can see all the benefits but does yours give false readings if you bend it slightly like in the video. Also the chatter between the detector and the pointer would be annoying.... hmmmm

Owned one since i began detecting in August 2011, and wouldn't go detecting with out it now.

Mine also beeps if i try and pry with it.

I normally dig a decent sized plug, if it don't beep on the 1st scan of the hole/plug without poking it hard into the wall of the hole,
I then dig it out a little deeper/wider with the digging tool, then rescan with the propointer.

Spend the cash on one, youll be glad you did, falsing and all ;)

Check out my BLOG : Its where i post my finds :D

Hi Lifejockey, Yes mine also beeps when you put side pressure on it but only in sensitive mode, no chatter when it is in its alloy cover that i made for it you can modify the sleave it comes with with alloy tape no chatter. Bill

Yup mine does the same. But only if I push on the middle like shown in the vid. I have never noticed it while in use, and with the amount of pressure needed to equal the same amount of pressure at this point it would take a fairly hefty leverage to "false" like that in real life use. If anybody wishes to use a Pro-pointer this way I would recommend they get themselves a crowbar.....

The Pro-pointer has a scraper built into it to scrap aside loose soil - it is not made to actually dig with and I don't know of any pin-pointer that has this function. My take on the vid is off somebody trying to find fault with a very good product.

Mine does it too, sometimes when you put it down next to a hole it starts beeping like in the vid as well (no, no other targets around it). Turning it off then back on and it's as good as gold, curious but not a big deal. Is hard to imagine not using one now!

Hi guys

Looking at getting the Fisher Pin pointer for $68 delivered. Some of the comments made say you get what you pay for while others are very happy so when I do get it, I'll let you know how I go. Sick of digging these holes and not finding anything even after my detector says it's there.

It's not that easy finding a good review on those Fisher/Bounty Hunter units
But as one of the guys said above something is better than nothing and if the cheaper one should die then you'll see the value in getting a more rugged unit. I don't think it matters what you have to start with you will love it anyway!

Happy hunting and undoubtedly you will find more, faster! *8^)

Yup, you get what you pay for with pin pointers. I also have a Automax which was free with my ATpro. For a total cost of $0 it was overpriced! Been trying to work out how to use it as a deadly weapon against its designer..... Another pin pointer I have is a Whites Bullseye II which came with the V3i. This one is much better and I would say similar to the Fisher unit. But the Pro-pointer is still leaps and bounds better then the Bullseye.

Get the best you can afford as any (apart from the Automax) is better then none. But unless you use a Pro-pointer you won't know what you are missing, if you can afford one I would say get a Pro-pointer from the start otherwise the Fisher pointer will work Ok.

I would need to tape up the battery compartment cover as it supposedly come loose and put some electrical tape on the tip to preserve the life of it.

I've ordered it so wait and see.

I went to a park that is now my favourite for nice old stuff. I found an old ladies watch there a couple of weeks ago and last night a Victorian era brass padlock. No key but a phote will be coming when I get it cleaned up. Had J. Morton and sons and either Northampton or Southampton on it with a crown and VR on the latch cover. Another whiole I dug, showed nothing. I really need a pinpointer.

I remember reading a common complaint was the adjustment VR/trimpot knob whatever they are called these days being bumped when being put down holes, maybe you could pull the knob off and put a small O ring over the shaft and squish the knob back down over the top making it just that little harder to turn. Just a thought.

Cool old Padlock by the way, most of the ones I've found have been newish and cut by bolt cutters.
That's what I love about this hobby, you never know what you will dig next.
My most curious find so far is a very catholic looking Jesus figurine. My fav line when showing people is I knew I was going to find a lot of different things when I was out detecting but I never thought I'd find Jesus. My brother who is a Pastor didn't seem to find it that amusing though!

I also use the Garrett Pro pin pointer and would'nt be without it.

Tried the depth increase trick with the coin and yes it worked all right.

Read about some interference issues when using it with the Minelab PI detectors,

that they would make the Minelabs sound off.

Found this possible solution by a fella who fixes and mods Minelab PIs.

http://www.youtube.com/w...mfu_in_order&list=UL

Wonder if putting it in a empty foil lined chip bag would also work.

I use an F-Point and the battery cover is too loose and the knob does get bumped when probing around with it. What I have done to remedy the situation is to think about taping the cover without ever actually doing it and being careful not to bump the knob. When I first got it I was not at all impressed and rarely used it unless it was dark. Then the other day someone was asking me about them and I played around with it and found that it was actually better than I had given it credit for. If I am careful about adjusting it, it will pick up a big coin like a penny over an inch away. It does interfere with my detector (F75) a bit when it is on, but I turn it off between targets. When the pinpointer is buzzing on a target the interference is much more pronounced so I suspect that it is just regular interference and not a frequency thing. I have taken it out the last few hunts and I am really kind of torn about how useful it is. Generally it is much faster without it, but on some occasions it saves a lot of time. I think it is helps me keep from gouging targets, so if I think it might be something good I have been using it, and if I am pretty sure it is a 1 cent I don't.

Well thanks Guardian, I appreciate that. What I strive to do is make it cheaper to get it from me so that people will be enticed to do so no matter how much of a jerk they think I am.

Am I buying my pin pointer off you Roger? Oh yes, I suppose I should look at you nick name a bit more closely. I'm keeping an open mind so I'll wait until I get to use it before coming to any conclusions.
