Added to that pile I have around half a kg of silver and maybe a grand in spendable coins which are long gone.

Theres some posts somewhere regarding the cashing in/weight/postal reqirements for coins and the return seems reosonable.

Check out the Reserve Bank website. There is a form you can download.
Just got to watch that the courier to Wellington is not costing more than the coins
being cashed in.

I went out for an overnighter with a couple of mates spent saturday detecting and got 5 grams.... Nothing too extreme but I was happy, one piece was 1.8 grams which isnt too bad. Will post some pictures some other time perhaps.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

Good going! I wish I was back home in Dunners.....definately a bit closer to the gold than here. The West Coast is just a tad far for a day trip unless you only wanted a few hours prospecting.

Yeah , if you factor the cost of petrol/diesel and the odds of finding enough to even cover that, gold hunting day trips from CHCH are right out.

Once I've converted my $5000 chiller truck into a camper van, however... :)

Went out detecting today, managed to find 2 silver items, one was a 1900 sixpence the other an un identified disk like thing with .925 on it. I dont normaly care even remotely about pennys but today I got 8 of them of which 5 were from before 1900. oldest was 1873 youngest 1936. I'll be heading back to that spot once I get a larger coil as the coins were quite deep.

Bit of everything mate, mostly detecting. What I didnt say was that it represents 48 days work, So thats roughly 4.5g a day.... ranged between 17g and 0g tho and also some days I have walked up to 20 km not counting all the zig-zagging through the creeks etc. while actually detecting

Hows it going folks, I have recently got a 10x5inch DD coil for my gold bug. Main reason I got this coil is because I wanted something that punches a bit deeper than the 5inch round DD I had previously. I have not done any propper comparisons between the two coils but after doing a few coin hunts in areas I have flogged with the 5inch I recon its well worth the upgrade.
The area I was at today had produced many old coins for me in the past but last time I was there I came away with essentially nothing. Today it seemed that the coins had grown back!! None of the coins I found would have been any shallower than maybe 5 inches and some were over 8 inches down (they were deeper than the knife I use to dig) and were clear signals that you wouldnt miss.
Basically all this is to say that im happy with the new toy, cant wait to try it on some gold!!
Oh and silver tally was 9 for today with most around 100yo and older.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

do you find it a bit harder to pin point with the larger coil?I use the smaller coil in parks so im not digging too big of a plug.

Have you used your gb on a beach and if so how did it go?wet sand?

Hey mate yeah it is harder to pinpoint with the big coil, i have found that it certainly is possible to keep the holes the same size as with the 5inch but you have to take a bit longer to actually 'pinpoint' the target with the detecor. Its harder when there are multiple targets close together. Pinpointing isnt so much of a problem when gold hunting as you dont go digging plugs.

I have used the detector at the beach and found it works fine in the dry sand but wet sand is another story altogether.
What I found is that you have to ground-balance the detecor on sand of a certain wetness and then stay on sand of that wetness. If you walked around willy nilly the detector just told me to bugger off.

yes that is what i have found also re wet sand,i also find the gain has to be turned down to 60sh to stop falsing but the trade off is depth loss, not really a wet sand machin\e.

thanks bro

I'm a bit worried about you and the large coil Mat. You were efficient enough with a smaller one. leave some for the rest of us eh. haha.

Hows it going, back to the spot where I got 9 silvers the other day.
Got 5 silvers 3x3d and 2x6d also 4 pennys 3 of which are sporting a young Victoria.
Got some sort of strange silver thing that looks like it used to be wrapped around something
Some sort of old Canada badge and a bunch of lead for making sinkers! Look forward to the fishing already!!
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

I think what you describe is called a 'ring' and is worn on the finger.
