Crikey you keep tabs on how much money you find, thats pretty dedicated! I usually just spend it, ive found those self checkouts at supermarkets are great because no1 questions you about the state of the coins. Must suck that your mrs has found a gold ring and you havnt! Ive only got one small 9 carat ring up to now
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

A spreadsheet for keeping tally of the coins you find...

Okay guys this coin detecting thing is becoming very scary. We tolerated the deviation from gold fossicking on the grounds that it is sort of the same but this spreadsheeting outrage is way over the top. Next thing you'll be hanging around down at the railway station with a notebook and posting information about trains. It's off the bloody chain.

A spreadsheets quite ok MB!

I actually bought a 24 compartment plastic box at the supermarket tonight just to tidy up my best finds and if you want
to see more useless information take a look at the data I put up on my blog yesterday www.metaldetectornz.blogspot.com

Oh yes there are heaps of time consuming / wasting things that can add on to metal detecting.
All good fun but.

I'm jealous of your blog spot. Bloody brilliant. Here are my finds from two days metal detecting St Kilda beach.

Included in here is 10 silver coins pre 1947, a 1950 half crown, $18.50 modern coins. several pennies and several half pennies. I had a silver ring but gave it away.

Its all gone through the tumbler.

Hi all, I'd love to show you a photo of the same sea undercutting I showed you all a week ago. Unbelievable. Now the undercut is over my head. I'll see what I can do with my camera in the dark after 10pm tonight. If you don't hear from me again the heavy seas have got me!

I am realising even more so now, of the need to properly record/document all finds as best you can. Seems a waste not to, all that work and no documentation.. Its kind of a legacy too for people to look back ar wot youve done and where youve been over the years. I go back to my records all the time. I have a hard covered book made up in all kinds of topics like.. Where and wot found (of coarse), old coin prices, members i like, pages of where to fossick for gold, stuff i buy for fossicking, and just other trivial stuff etc. I use this book every day. Very valuable.

I would agree creamer. I have a little fossicker's Journal that I use for my panning as well as my detecting. It helps me to know where good spots are and are not... VERY Valuable Info.
