great stuff guys :)

heres some more finds from the 26th...a cool old rng it must be a junker but may have once had gold plate on it...some more silvers and my oldest penny yet, 1854 and its from France. pretty cool considering it most likely traveled over with one of local first settlers!!

Cheers and happy hunting :)
Dan

Thats a cool penny....I want one! I reckon Akaroa would be a good place to get one. Its meant to be the french settlers town around here.

You have some excellent finds there Dan.
That penny is quite scarce I would imagine.
Seems that Timaru is the place to be for silver too.

cheers everyone :)

Here's another coupla days hunting evenings while taking the russells for their rabbit hunt (glorified wording for shitting somewhere else)

the "july" photo is a collection of 3 different days of finds while hunting a spot we obtained permission for...krystal found an awesome ww1 silver medal at this place and we're still tracking it's owners history for a video. My cool finds there were a brass firemans button with the rasied axes and a junior soldiers pin, and the 1899 silver shilling. Anything last century is cool in my books :)

thanks man that shilling is just a british one...the 1933 3d I got in yesterdays tally is aalmost what I'd call proof...it does have tiny tiny blemishes tho otherwise it looks liked it was dropped the day it was minted. definitely bagging n tagging that one! I garked 3 silvers yesterday thru impatience and digging too fast. Dick!

Thats a damn good amount of old coins. On another note....what target id do the modern 20c and 50c come up with for you? I seem to be missing them as I just dont get any and when i tested a 20c the detector only picked it up a quarter of the time if that. I tried with no discrim also.

Thats an interesting observation because it is exactly what I find - with some detectors I think 'some people have it' and 'some people dont' - the most foolproof detector I have ever seen is the old time Garrett Deepseeker - it is so easy to use and totally foolproof but my Minelab and my Goldbug confuse me and yet my son has found a good deal of gold with my MIneblab and is now finding heaps of coins and treasures with his new Goldbug...but me,,,total confusion!
The old Garrett deepseeker has a switch and you set discrimination to where you want it then switch it to all metals - find a target on all metals, flip switch and bingo you know if its ferrous or non ferrous, worth digging up or not worth digging up. Even the noise is easier to determne I think.

The trouble with the new steel coins is that they are so much like bottle caps. I never find them in discrimination mode because the detectors computer is set up to screan out bottle caps and it works really well in that regard. In all metal mode they light up, but I assume they are iron/steel and still ignore them. The only time I get them is when they are on or real close to the surface and chirp like a coin.

That makes sense....maybe i'll not use any discrim when doing bark playgrounds then. I thought it might be something to do with the fact the have steel in them...Found $5 in one hole the other day...the detector just about jumped outta my hand! No missing that signal!

I have a hard time with are 5 cents and older 10 cents because they give a signal like foil, and the older 20 and 50 cents and the non-silver florins, those all come up like pull tabs and I can't tell the difference.

Yeah I must admit that i've been lazy and only digging the 50 plus target id numbers. I havnt found any 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent pieces with the F2. I had a cheap detector beforehand that made me dig every signal.I found quite a few with that. Its hard to make yourself dig a hole knowing that 90% chance it will be rubbish and I've most likely missed something good by doing so.
Might go try to find some silvers soon. Where shall I go? Seems like most of the obvious places are hunted out but who knows.

Well I have two strategies; if I am somewhere that has a lot of signals and seems like it has not been hunted I turn the discrimination up and the sensitivity down and go as fast as I can. I found $64 in gold coins doing this one day. If on the other hand the area seems picked over I turn the discrimination down and the sensitivity up and look for deep targets. If I am getting a signal 10" deep it is likely older than pull tabs and is very possibly something good. I find a lot less stuff when doing this but I find more silver coins (especially 3 pence) and other old junk.

I think it is just a matter of getting use to the signals and digging up some rubbish...i have found quit a few of the newer 10 20 and 50 cent coins with the
gold bug both in all metal mode and in disc mode...they do ring off as a rubish number but they give off a different tone most of the time..as for the older coins
no probs finding them..lol..but i probably dig some signals that you guys wouldnt as to you they are a junk signal..or within 1 of a junk signal...lol

Think outside the square. If you are on a park that you think has been hunted out then start looking around for areas that you would not have considered hunting. For example a bit of waste land behind some trees at the far end etc. If you see a spot that looks good then chances are another detectorist has thought the same and hunted it, but there will be areas that they (and you) walked right past in a rush to get to that "good spot" The parks could have had a very different layout in the old days and people would have picnicked & played in different areas then what they do now. These areas could now be over grown or an isolated corner etc.

I'd say... TIMARU! Roadtrip anyone? hehe!
Great finds btw MSB! Have ya almost hunted out that area they are going to concrete over?
Just yell if ya need a hand before the bulldozers are sent in ;)

Any old parks or reserves that have been around for ages since those days, may still hold silver coins.
One place i have had in mind, but haven't yet visited is the Halswell Quarry area.
130 years of operation ending in 1990, could be an interesting area to hunt :)
