Taken advantage of the shite weather to collect all the spendies from the local playgrounds. Nothing interesting really found until tonight. While mrs westiedigger was visiting some friends I escaped to the beach for 20 minutes.
A few spendies and some old decimals in pretty good condition. Going back tomorrow to get rest.

After carefully cleaning my Canadian Quarter and blowing up some close up photos its clearly a 1981 coin so that's nickel not silver.
The marks on the snakes head looks like a cobra symbol maybe they are Indian funeral tokens I can remember reading something on a forum about cobras and scattering ashes but I can't find it. If thats the case I will return them to the beach.

I found a whole lot of those snakes on pt chev beach a while back.
Think they will becpme more common as time go on due to our growing
cultural makeup.

Back in auckland and tried being a bit smarter with the discrimination and locations.
Hit a beach and got a lot of brass, bronze and copper scrap Including the tampered padlock.
The heart locket is junk.
Brass Hour glass shape I think is the backing plate for a scouting or military insignia.
Also eyeball found the stem off a clay tobacco pipe.
Earliest coins old decimal 10c and 1c.
Will try again low tide tomorrow.

Trademe pickup messed up tide for clay pipe beach so headed to area that should be good.
I have tried there before but was confounded by the millions of pull tabs and bottle caps.
Lots of discrimination and saw me pulling a lot of 1c,2c,5c &10c old decimal currency.
Most have lost their dates but most that do are mid 70s and the 1970 matchbox car leads me to think that I am not in the right spot based on my research I should be getting stuff from the 1900s and earlier here as well.
The bullet shell has lost its head stamp but its probably a .303

Back up north for work. Had hoped to smash a few beaches but work got in the way. Hit a few playgrounds in Dubtown which were pretty clean evidently someone local visits them regularly.
Got a few spendies and 2 crusty 5c a 1966 auzzie 2c and a 1968 US quarter.
Also tried the beach in front of one of the playgrounds and found a definite musket/pistol ball that I put back into the tide.
Drove out to a surf beach after work one night but only found a few spendies but horror of horrors left my sand scoop somewhere on the beach... it was dark once I realized and I could not find it.

Awesome find. Probably been through the middle east and then to Galipoli 1914 - 1917.
Found one up here along with a Galipoli remembrance medalion, was very happy as military finds up here are few and far between.

Land wars by-catch from a spendy hunt.
40th of Foot button made by Smith Kemp and Wright of Birmingham.
A UK metal detecting site dates it as 1840's. A Google search puts the 40th in the area in the early 1860's.
Wasn't looking for it but it beats a cruddy 10c.

Wow!...stunning find, and in such good nic too. That's the sort of find that makes this great hobby of ours so addictive. What you have there is a small but very real piece of our nations early, turbulent European history. Just imagine what that small button must have been through and what it's owner must have seen and done in the very early years of European settlement.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
