At 3.9 grams it sounds like you have a half sovereign. Don't know the value of that particular year but most 1/2 sovereigns go for $250 to $300. Great find!

Most certainly a half sovereign. And that was the first year for Vicky. Even in average condition it could be worth a lot more than melt value. If it's in really good condition you're talking very high value. DO NOT ATTEPT TO CLEAN IT!

Well done!

yes it was in a river and no i managed to see it before it went up the hose, its very rare i cant find one anywere on the internet for sale, being the very first year of mint, with the young victoria head. she started her reighn in 1837 and coin made in 1838. so i think its worth a shit load of money as it is in very good condition :):):) im so friggin happy

Firstly the good news - absolutely marvelarse on all accounts - a nice sample of gold and to find gold already refined and made into a coin is just fantastic!
Yes indeed it would make my day once upon a time when I was first pottering about and I would have been over the moon as well.

Now the bad news - you said ' i think its worth a shit load of money' - not at all. Its value is not in any way affected by the fact that it is her first year of reign. That is actually immaterial - its condition is dependent on two factors - condition and mintage numbers and its value is average compared with the first ten years of mintage during the Victorian era. It looks by the photo that it is only fine condition and thats a lower condition - clearer photos would give a better indication though.

I know approximately where there is TEN THOUSAND pound in Gold coins and ALL predate 1862 - now imagine what that is worth. Imagine twenty thousand of the coins you found - and yes it is right here in Kiwiland.

Great find and may you find its mates! These things often went walkabout with a mate or two!

i would love 10000 pounds of coins :0

Very nice find

Here is a screen shot of the latest Krause World Coins 1801-1900 6 Edition give ruff idea of value in condition. Keep in mind price in USD and at time of printing the exchange rate they had listed was 1 USD is 1.37 NZD also this was based on a gold price of $1000 USD and we all know that has changed

Anyway it is a lovely coin and I would have been very happy to have found it as well and all I am saying is that the first year of the Queens reign has nothing to do with scarcity and mintage numbers, the scarcity is on a par with all other gold coins of the same era ie comparatively common and not 'as rare as hens teeth'
As for the bad news - it was a tongue in cheek comment that basically the coin was only worth hundreds and NOT 'A shit load' whatever in heck that means!
