Hey mate, congrats on the finds, good gold and coin.
Aobout your ears, I know x-terra steve from this forum was having a bit of ear trouble and he got something that swimmers use.
I think you can get drops to put in your ear and also a product made from beeswak that you sort of plug your ears up with.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

With the 1/2 sov and 6p found it would be worth hitting the surrounding land with a detector. I can't imagine old timer's carrying such coinage on them when they were actually working the digs and would have stashed their cache. Thus they must have been camped somewhere in the area? Maybe a washout / slip or similar disaster took their valuables into the stream?

I reckon there's bound to be more (and likely more sov's) around.

i can guess how and why they might be there, many years ago there was a barge/ferry in the river to take horses and carts from one side to the other many people drowned i beleave. and hence the coins, well thats my theory :)

dont plug your ears up if youre going under water it will end in a burst eardrum. go to chemists and get swimmers ear drops works good and only a few dollars.

thanks for the info, i had to go to the doctors im on pills and ear drops i have a bad inner and outer infection seperate in each ear, only dived 3 days in a row for 3 hours each day, i must have really sensitive ears. im not using a hood so i might get one. and ear plugs are bad unless they are dive ones with a hole in them to release pressure you might blow your ear drum. im gutted 4 weeks is so long when you want to dredge and have to for a living :(

Yes you did find an awesome coin and as I said at the beginning - look some more as these things were never thrown away and it likely may have mates - especially if its owner lost it under tragic circumstances - the New Zealand death - drowning and that happened a great deal on the West Coast. I also think that your theory is an excellent one and probably correct.

Try not to get offended so easily and never ever get personal.

Just finished watching an episode of "Cash in the Attic" on the History Channel (recorded last week).
This guy was getting lots of his cool old stuff organised to take to auction, so that he could afford to get his missus a new horse float. Whilst looking through his stuff, one of the shows' hosts found a small envelope, and bugger me.......if it wasn't filled with gold sovereigns!!...........13 in total. "Oh yeah, I had forgotten I had those. I think I've got some half sovereigns tucked away somewhere too". After a while, the host says" and we also found 9 half sovereigns to take to auction also".
And all I want is to be able to find ONE............surely to God.........ONLY ONE!!!!

Whoooh........this is getting way outta hand...........I'm outta here!

Very nice find and a massive coincidence dredging that up,well done!
I've got the 2010 edition of Spinks,it lists the price as...
F-£85
VF-£135
EF-£400
UNC-£900

I'd estimate yours somewhere between VF and EF but its difficult without macro pics.
