First time on this side of the forum ;) had my first weekend out with an x- terra 30 and was bloody stoked! as well as a bit soaked :) very happy with finding two shillings 1874, 1906, a few pennies and more modern coinage. Most interesting was a small ring made from a 1940 half penny.

Sure was a good feeling pulling out of the ground a bit of history, I was a very happy lepresean indeed and could of almost done the little dance, thanks tonznz for showing me the ropes and sending me in a good direction to swing the coil... it is a rented one and yes it is teasing me a bit, but motivating me to get that gold bug 5" :)

Some finds of the last little while...1891 sixpence....1906 half penny..some silver :) the chain is quite small and almost every link has what looks like a lion stamp, the ring looks quite a modern one and it's hand made quality's are obvious. Pretty darn stoked eh..found a few other things that I am cleaning up...also a large bullet which my dad has borrowed.

Yep. The lion stamp menas it's definitely sterling .925.

With other stamps and no lion stamp, it could well be plated, or not even silver.

very nice ring sean, being stamped on each link I would say that chain is pretty old.

Borrowed a friends Garrett Ace 250, spent two days digging up foil...man it loves foil and jumpy signals all over the place that are gone when you dig them, It can detect quite deep 6-8in+, after seven hours all up finally two pennies last night, and today.... a couple of sixpence and my first 9ct of precioussssss :)

Been visiting the park near my house that Tony and I had a wee look at, using the ace 250 the ground had dried out a bit over the last few weeks and went over spots that I hunted with the x-terra 30, and was surprised to see a locket which I think is 9ct in two parts about 1/2 a meter apart at about 5in deep has the name Marjory on it, and some silver..a poor 1934 sixpence.....a sorry unknown coin completely obliterated on the date side... and an 1898 threepence. At the park there is a flat raised platform where a house used to be around the start of last century. I was fortunate enough to meet a local who has researched the history of North East Valley quite extensively and told me of all the misfortunes that occurred at the house site and he had access to the coroners reports, told me of one poor fella who climbed the flag pole and it being rotten collapsed. Most of the family passed on at the house all within a few years, one was in the army and I wonder if the crown badge is something to do with that? As well as a large cal bullet I found a few pennies of various dates and half pennies of the 1940's, these I have soaking in olive oil. Sorry the pics are not the greatest...the small piece of jewellery has the words MIZPAH on it and the copper coin is an Otago centennial coin found at one of Tony's spots :)

Nice group of finds there Sean. Particularly love the Centennial coin and can share your frustration through my own experience, at not being able to date that silver but I can tell you that the head is of William the Fourth, 1831 to 1837...so it's a pretty awesome find!

It's amazing what info comes to light about an area when you do a little research or talk to a local.
While away on Christmas holiday, I visited a small rural town and spoke to an old guy working in his garden. He had a real old looking barn-type building that I had spotted behind his old house. He told me that the barn was well over 100 years old and that in a previous life, it had been a storage house for an old-style convenience store (now his house) back in the 1910's/20's.
Apparently, the store owner at the time had had considerable misfortune in his life. His son had died at the War and his wife had died shortly afterwards. He was so grief-stricken that he hung himself in that barn. It was the old guys father that had found him hanging.
I had been considering asking the old guy for permission to MD around that old barn but after his story I thought it inappropriate to ask.

I think you'll find it's actually William the Fourth (1831-37) Roy.
