That's great news poohbear, as there was a 6 hour period I was having difficulty working out how I could entertain you all .
We are very traditional in our ways down this part of the country and tradition mandates that the individual celebrating their day of birth, shouts for family and friends at the closest watering hole.
In years past, the amount shouted was 1 drink per person per year on this earth, but with todays high pub prices, it has been reduced to 1 drink per 10 years.
It may be prudent on your behalf to bring proof of age, (birth certificate, passport etc.). as the recipients of your shout will demand 1 drink per 10 years and without proof of age, they will dictate how old you look.
That will satisfy your request of somewhere good to be taken to, and as for the something good to take home, I can imagine that after the above, you will have many fond memories to return home with
Are there any other members attending that have their birthday falling over the weekend or 1 week either side? What the heck! lets make it 2 weeks either side.
If there are, it may be necessary to book the Coach & Horses out for the entire weekend.
It’s a little unfortunate that mine was 3 weeks ago, as I would have gladly shouted for you all. But we cant change tradition, can we.
But seriously, now that I am aware it’s your Birthday Poohbear, I guarantee, you will locate an article of immense value that will take pride of place on the shelf in the Pool Room. (The Castle)
May only be sentimental value, but that is often more important than monetary value.

Hi,
I have come down to Christchurch to go on a gold prospecting weekend and I called Robert McBride to see if he knew of anywhere I could hire a detector for the weekend and he told me about this weekend.

Me and my mate Jeff are real keen to come along, we have book the accommodation so see you tonight at Lawrence.

Dan and Jeff are the names if I have to be added to a list :)

Hi mate, ya can rent an x-terra 30 somethingarather from hirquip dunedin for something like $20-$36 a day, 2 day for one weekend special, you get a small rebate on it's return. Have a great weekend people....:) I will try make it if I can but it a case of two places/same time, the Lawrence museum is great and haunted up stairs, so is the Gabriels, some good colour now starting to show finally at the gold fossicking reserve, thanks to whoever dug the holes and made the dams to run the sluice boxes, you have to move a bit of gravel but it is easy digging. Clue :1..a small stream runs in a gully with a particular name, both are called the same....whoever pm me first with the correct name of the gully and stream will be sent a small prize...clue :2..it's on a road that also has the same name.....good luck and if you figure out where I am alluding to, right beside the road is the place to look.

Many thanks to CluthaPete for organising a fantastic weekend at Lawrence, I believe that you could have done a better job with the weather - but thanks mate - a weekend out of the box. And I got some gold!
Thanks also to all the other fossickers there for making it such a memorable weekend and for sharing your knowledge so generously. Special thanks also to Robert McBride of Puiaki Supply, mate, I don't know your forum name but thanks for organising the detector competition and for your generosity with the prize of a Lesche Digging Tool. It has already dug a few bottle tops and tear tabs, and Poobear also for helping set it up.
All you other fossickers out there who didn't make it - tough luck, you missed a brilliant weekend, I hope that you can make it next time. Even if no-one else makes it, in the words of Arnie - "I'll be back."

Well the inorgrial Weekend Get Together passed without any major mishaps and by the feedback I received, everyone enjoyed themselves.
Was expecting 20 at the most, and was surprised and a little concerned when over 30 turned up. Had to quickly organise a lot more tucker and hopefully no one went hungry
I cant divulge how much Gold was found, but can confirm that everyone attending(and going by recent Trade me listings) had the opportunity of obtaining enough Gold to start their own auctions on TradeMe
I’m probably not the best one to give an indication as to the success of the weekend, so will leave that to others that attended
My most memorable moments of the weekend are as follows.(in no particular order)
The look on the faces of the ladies when I told them to “shooooosh” ( Priceless)
The response from the same ladies when I asked them to clean my dishes ( Un printable on a public forum)
The change in the pitch of Jocks(camp owner) voice when he saw his 1st bit of Gold in his pan
The motivation and enthusiasm shown by the 3 younger guy’s that turned up
Don't get disillusioned Guys at not finding huge nuggets, You all have what it takes, and it’s only a matter of time till you will be posting heaps of photo’s of your finds on the forum
Experienced dredgers & fossickers freely giving out information and advice to us novices.
MDer’s excitement when showing off their finds
The member (who’s name will remain anonymous . G) finishing his mug of coffee to find a sizeable amount of fine gold at the bottom of the mug.
He had obviously placed some concentrates in the mug at some stage, forgotten about them, and made his coffee as normal. No one will ever know how much gold he drank and possibly the most expensive coffee he has drunk. There would be a way to retrieve the consumed Gold, but it doesn't bear thinking about.
Whoops! I must have a wrapped sense of humour or too many coffee’s , as I just imagined (in not too much detail) , walking around the side of G’s campervan and seeing him squatting over a gold pan and asking him what he’s doing.
And finally just the general atmosphere of the weekend – Absolutely brilliant. Even the crap weather didn't dampen anyone's enthusiasm
Never heard one angry word or negative comment,

Thanks to Robert & Chris ( Puiaki Supplies) and Daniel (Goldrush Tours & supplies) for displaying their merchandise
Another thanks to Robert & Chris for organizing the Detecting challenge with prizes
Results: 1st Bazza
2nd--- Poohbear
3rd--- Pete N
A special mention of the member who came in at a respectful 6th, who didn't even use a metal detector. I thought a prize was in order for his outstanding ability, but the powers that be, obviously thought otherwise

I must apologize to everyone that noticed the misshapen bread at the meals . This was caused by one Fox Terrier who decided the tray of bread in the back of the truck was a lovely soft warm place to lie on the road trip to Lawrence. She has been reprimanded and has given her word , that it wont happen next year.
Talking of next year, It looks as though this may become an annual event and plans and ideas have already started flowing.
After working out the costing's for the weekend meals, there were a few $’s left over and rather than keeping it , I saw the little blue box at the bottom of the main page on the Forum. The extra funds will be going there.
Thanks for all the time & effort you put into the Forum Gavin. It’s much appreciated by all the members

Thanks everyone for making this one amazing weekend.
Roll on next year.

Yep, it was an awesome weekend. The weather was crap, I found very little gold, but had a great time anyway. So that just shows you the caliber of the people that turned up. Would do again next year for sure. A big thanks to Clutha Pete for a great job of organising

Hi all, I would like to say a big special thankyou to Clutha Pete for organizeing a very good get together of forum members and extras. Having been to the panning champs and spending hours conversing with like mined people and then doing it all over again this past weekend is very satisfying. To all the people at the get together thank you all. May next years event be as sucessful , even the snow in the hills didnt dampem my spirits, and to top it off the evening was a big success, Good luck all

A great weekend cluthapete, like the the previous posts we enjoyed meeting like minded people and the sharing of info. in arrowtown tonjght. Was wishing I had my 4wd today, 1km off the road up a farmers paddock rental car bellied down in about a foot of sloppy mud. Anita didnt ljke getting out to push in the mud and rain, after about 2 hours and a couple cubic meters of shingle shifted from the creek in the gold pan we got out. Dont you hate it when they tell you not to go there because you know what happened last time, and they are right. cost me a flash meal and wine and accomadation in a hotel for the night best room with special views over the river, and no treats
Thanks again to everyone you made our weekend one that we will remember for a long time.
Leave Otago for home on friday hope there isnt to much mud up Naesby way.

Yep, it was a grand weekend. Thanks for coming up with that idee Pete, well done. It was the first time for me visiting the Otago gold fields. I am a bit shocked how locked up your part of the country is, all my experience is on the West Coast and Nelson area where we are spoiled with the freedom of conservation land. Anyway, i am already planing an other trip to the Roxborough area and i am sure there will be more. I love the scenery, the hills are smaller, just as steep but very little bush bashing. Gonna find that monster nugget next to that undiscovered mother load one yard of the 4wd track.
You can pencil me in for next years do.
Cheers

Hi Pete,
Just a quick note to thank you for organising the weekend at Lawrence, Christine and I both learned a lot and enjoyed meeting all the other fossickers that attended. We stopped off at Danseys Pass Camp Ground for our final two nights and despite all my efforts in the frost and cold southerlies only managed to find one real nice flake and lots of tiny specks of gold. Seems we still need to buy some more gear - a crevice sucker and a sluice box - even got the approval of my wife as she has caught the bug too!
Back home now and it's a hell of a lot warmer than down there.
Thanks again,
John
