Is there enough interest for a weekend get together of Paydirt members
My thoughts were to hold a 2/3 day weekend so members can meet the many likeminded enthusiasts on the forum
The weekend would include practical hands on demonstrations of both detecting and prospecting techniques
Retailers showcasing their products
A few guest speakers, Local historians , geologists and some of our experienced members giving a presentation
Hopefully members would bring along interesting finds and their favourite equipment.
There is also aslight possibility of detecting at a local heritage site and also prospecting on private land. ( need to do a little more home work on that )
We could also visit the local historic mining sites in the area, do a jet boat ride up the Clutha and maybe visit the commercial mining operations currently working the area.
Accommodation is quite cheap at the local camping ground, with about 20 cabins and plenty of camping sites available
There’s also a few motels available for those requiring a few finer comforts
No idea when at this stage, but probably in the new year

So let me know if your are interested and any other ideas you may have, and if enough of you are, I will start organising it.
Cheers

sounds great. i'd definitely attend if it doesn't clash with work. i'm sure i can find a way to work around any work.

with the 150th anniversary of the rush there will be quite a bit of interest going back into gold this summer i think.

i can imagine it will be a terrible season in the more public spots for gold miners. i remember when i worked down on the shotover for a few summer each day. some days i felt i spent all day talking to people, explaining the basics of gold etc. i always put in an effort to talk to anyone who came by. there were a lot of tourists of course but also many people visiting from the coast, southand, otago, nelson etc. i am amazed at how many of these guys had a claim now or previously, or had worked in a mine of some sort here or overseas. i still remember one guy from the coast who was amazed at my progress. his place got 1 gram of gold to the tonne of material.

I like the idea Pete, and am hugely interested in the historic aspect, where the old guys mined and how they went about it etc... Also finding some new places to fossick (with permission) and meeting new people with the same interest can only be good for the hobby.

Some time in the new year sounds good to me as I plan to be down that way for my Summer break with my gold fossicking equipment.

Great Idea!!!

Excellent idea Pete. As with your other replies, as long as I can get the time off work...count me in! As a newbee to the forum and to detecting in general, I would find the weekend as a whole very beneficial. Like Cleggie, I think the historical side would be facinating also.
Great idea...bring it on!

Some good news & some bad
First the good . The weekend get together is a goer
Shot up to Lawrence a couple of days ago for a wrecky and lets just say , it should be a memorable weekend
One display (which even gets me quite excited), is a form of mining that has possibly never seen by any of you.
One of the pioneer work horses may be brought out of the cob webs.

Called in at the camping ground and spoke to Jock & Marie about our options and unfortunately, this is where the bad news comes in to play
Due to the large influx of NI shearers arriving to tend to our national flock, the Cabins are fully booked from January on
So that leaves us with pre 2013. At this stage I am looking at the first weekend in November, but need to finalize a few other details before this date can be confirmed.
Sorry to you guy’s that mentioned a preference for 2013
Any chance of you brother putting his wedding forward a couple of months exkiwi123 or perhaps don't be an ex.
And Cleggie, November is much better weather than January down this way.

Once the date and location is confirmed, and rather than me doing all the work, and as an educational lesson, you will be given the GPS co-ordinates of the location and it will be up to you to research the area to find out as much as you can, which will increase your enjoyment and success for the weekend
Google Earth is a fantastic research tool and combined with searching Google, it’s amazing what one can find out. (actually a little scary too)
Doing the right research you should be able to locate the exact location of the shops, pubs and cottages that used to dot this 1 km long valley.
If you are really good at research, you will locate an area right in the middle, of where we might be, that was never mined . There is quite a long storey to why it wasn't mined, but I wont go into that at the moment. Lets just say there is no geological reason that gold is not in this 5 area area and one of you may be able to sell Kaka the 1 ounce nugget he’s after ( if he doesn't come to the weekend)
But there's still quite a bit of work to be done before any of this can be confirmed.
Keep watching and will update asap

Cheers
