Hi John - I had not put any more on in the interim as I was more or less gauging interest to see what sort of reception a detailed account might have - Yes my sons bit of gold is quite a nice piece - he found it right where I had used chemical persuasion twenty years ago in an area I never have really worked thoroughly. It was not in the main crevice which is exceedingly difficult to work as it is wedged shaped and the bank is also slick rock wedge shaped so it overhands on the top side and slick on the other side so you actually have to sort of wedge yourself into the wedge - if you can understand that. It was in another overhanging crack near the main one so I had missed it all those years ago but the detector picked it up. Hes doing better than me nowdays as the detector is sure the way to go and he certainly knows how to use it.

The rain just gives me more time to think about all the gold I am going to find next time I am up there haha! In this small gully I had often years ago just picked nuggets up after it had rained so merely used to go for walks up it winters snow melt.

Real forlorn country - Over the years we had some interesting and strange experiences here at night and I never liked the thought of staying alone up here. The very first time I was ever here about 1970 I walked straight into the creek within the scope of this photo broke open a crevice and within minutes had found half an ounce of nuggety gold. Also within the scope of these photos I found about two ounces in a small hole below the cliffs in the back ground... the cliffs on the left hand side of hte photos but on the right hand side of the stream where there are three sort of white marks which is the rock showing.

In the creek behind the hut and obscured by the hill the bedrock of the creek had been drilled with hand augers presumable to lower the water level.

Just out of view of these photos to the right of the hut and in the gully on the photographers sid eof the hut I found an overhang with all the miners cache of gear - the augers used to drill into the creek bed, billy, a sluicing gun nozzle end fitting and other assorted items.

The gold in the last photo was all found within view of the photos.

Sometimes I tend to think that we were totally daft going gold mining on some of the days we did and I can still picture my gold mining friend at the age of 88 falling into the river behind where my cobber is standing in the second photo - it was not the fact that he fell in but rather the fact that it was snowing heavily and in retrospect I cannot remember how I was even game enough to attempt to get up the side of the mountain in the snow to get to this spot in my Landrover in the first place. I had to get him back down from the mountain to the hut shown in the first photos and get the fire going - The only words he said to me were "By Joves this is a great adventure"

I thought it was his Goldbug he had on Saturday and he WAS with me all day and I didnt notice until he told me yesterday that it was my Minelab he was carting around and found the gold with so methinks the repro mans about to strike...I knew he had my Minelab in the truck but for some obscure reason I thought he had his Goldbug on the hill and out the back.

Well John it might be said that I was 'preoccupied' and when my brain is in Gold mode it is generally at half mast in relationship to anything else except naked Nymphos sunbathing in the tussocks and theres none of them up there...I would have and did see it but it just didnt register... although in retrospect I think I put my Gold bug down beside the Minelab when he called me back to see how the Goldbug reacted to the nugget - actually as I sit here its sort of coming back to me - its called 'Senior Citizen Syndrome' or SCS - sort of a cross between Senility and dementia with an emphasis on the demented part of Dementia.

The bottom end of our claim was below this gorge - it was a pretty formidable place to be at the height of summer and huge boulders in places made it difficult to negotiate parts of it. There used to be two mobs of racist goats here - I never saw them together as they seemed to have segregated themselves and yet on occasions I saw them within sight of each other. One consisted of white Angoras and the other was a mob of coloured animals. On hot summers evenings we used to go across to knock a couple out. They were fairly wily critturs and used to make sure they had a clear view so that no one could get too close too easily but I remember after a few too many actually cool libations actually climbing one of the cliffs to come up below them - when ever I went back there I used to look at the cliff and wonder how I ever got up it...I still dont know...and carrying a rifle over my shoulder - the Devil looks after his own.

Sadly a mongrel who worked for 'The system' - a loyal arse licker if ever there is one went over and wiped them out...he was also one of those people who was very happy to lie for his master and when the claim was due for renewal produced false evidence to try to prevent us getting it, producing their submission not ten working days prior to the hearing as required but delivering it to my father the evening of the day before I understand. The hearing was deferred to a later date when his lies became apparent... Thats the way some people are.

Hi Lammerlaw,
You seem a bit of a character there graham. I was up that way a month back and popped in but bumped into one of your mates there Paul? Its good to see that waipori still has a few characters around cos there sure used to be by all accounts. Mysterious Billy he mined up there somewhere.Heard my Gt Uncle Fred talk about him recently on a CD (Talked about waipori in 1940s to NZ Radio) about the ole days up there. He had a store there somewhere round you as well. My Gt Gt Grandad run it for him selling to chinese race builders I think. So its nice to see traditions still carrying on. One day we will meet up ,Cheers Rusty

GIDDAY,GT, thanks for the stories, I am pleased to hear of your expliots in the gold mining era and the local history, most of what i can find in writtern form all dates back a long way. The info you are sharing is current and will never be lost now you are writing it up. Ive read all Barry crumps books and know most of them were bull or stories he borrowed of others and changed to suit himself. Keep it up, ther are plenty of us out ther that want to what have got to share . I have just started dredgeing for the season and need to keep checking out all the holes ,this is a new area for me so will let you all know how we get on, have found a few bits with quarzt stuck to them, but according to records all the working reefs were south of me so might get lucky and find some virgin ground upriver Cherrs, keep up the good work GT

Well I guess you must know me and you have me bamboozled - I like your dredge and wish you heaps of luck for this year - it might be a good summer so you should have a great time - if only just being there - and hopefully much success.

Recently a friend has told me a little about fellows he knows and I am somewhat amazed at where they are finding gold so it may not matter too much about the location of reefs down stream as there could well be gold where you intend going which came from entirely another source...if you dont try you dont find out.

As for the area I go - I dare say you may know exactly - it is high time someone wrote a history book for the area but there are two people one of whom I know well whos qualifications to write a book are better than mine and they both hold very substantial records of the area gleaned from newspapers, Mines records etc. while mine are only anecdotal although I am thinking of putting some comparison photos taken by a depression miner on beside mine. ..although I do have a great deal of records gleaned form Papers Past as well as letters form a Depression miner and oral accounts given me by a few 'oldies'

The bottom end of our claim was in the gorge and a great place it was to potter - these photos were taken when the river was high - I liked it when it was high as it moved a great deal of gravel and exposed gold.
The cliff I climbed to get below the goats is on the left - my son and his cobber have climbed the one on the right - the really high one.

In the first photo a long crevice followed along on the right hand side and goes up into the bank and you can see it up the hill. A lot of gold came out of it in the early to mid 1980's

From the next two photos to the bend above not much gold was found at all and yet there is only a couple of hundred yards between the photo looking downstream through between the cliffs and the next two looking upstream...but between where the downstream and upstream photos were taken is another story.

It was also between the downstream and upstream photos that a certain department took photos of their own excavations and presented them as evidence of our gold mining damage...at the claim hearing the dishonest deception was revealed and it more or less humiliated the Lap Dog who took them, faithfull arselicker of his masters that he was...or should that be 'is'

The fourth photo show some of the section of river in between - just on the bedrock here nuggets were picked up by me weighing up to 4dwt or 6grammes and George Welch got a 12dwt nugget here.

The following photos show what was for us our own private sluice box...after every flood we just walked down the creek when it was dry as the water had been diverted - no work required - great days and some good finds...we were over there summer and winter, snow and brilliant sweltering sunshine - it was here that photos were taken by the very people who carried out the earthworks visible in corners of the photos and presented as our damage in an attempt to prevent us getting this claim back. They were all taken between the downstream and upstream photos above.

re photos Great pics looks like ther is a bit of snow and ice around. Its looking abit cold for me ,I havnt got a heated wetsuit yet, maybe next year. THe photos look familar but not to sure . You would know my face if you saw the truck but that was a while ago, yes gold is where you find it and not always where it should be. Compared to the Palmer river Nth QUeensland, the rivers here are realy clear and no little crocs to take off your fingers All the info you have is going to be invaluebal to the next generation of diggers so please write it down before its lost forever ,we never know when our time could be up,not yet i hope ,got plenty of gold to find yet CHERRS!!!!

Son got a 4 dwt nugget last week so I dare say by midday tomorrow I will be on the hill - I had determined to work this spot twenty years ago but never really did it justice but this last week made some specialized scratchers to get three or so foot down into a narrow crevice so heres hoping!

I always wanted to kill a croc - besides the older I get the more I shake and the blurrier the vision so I reckon I might have a better chance with one of them as they are bigger targets than wabbits!

Plenty of time to write it down - St Peter aint gonna beckon for a while yet and the Devil looks after his own...all that combined with the fact that only the good die young seems to indicate that I will last forever.

Thanks Chris - I got back from Christchurch at eleven last night. It is a real shame you couldnt have come down this weekend as we are going back to where David got his 4dwt nugget last Saturday tomorrow but taking the right tools to get into a narrow and deep overhanging crevice which I have always known has good gold in it.
