(Ignoring the above few rants)...

Yes there is still gold in the Shotover. Plenty of it. Being a big river there is loads of flood gold being deposited in every flood. Head down to the river down the track that starts next to the Edith Cavel Bridge on it's south side. Many people hit this spot on a daily basis. It's probably one of the most accessible spots around. I'm really surprised it is not a legal prospecting spot as it is i think one of the most heavily used locations, probably even more so than the Arrow River by Arrowtown.
Trust me. You won't find a nugget in this spot thou. i spent several summers there digging. Shit loads of fines and the odd thin flake. did get enough to make 2 wedding rings though.

Best trick is to try as close. to the water line as possible. And around rocks and under them. Beware of the jetboats. They will try and and drench you. Winter or otherwise.

Good luck

Now now children...seriously though it is great that there is a difference of opinion here and it isnt me getting picked on...I can see the points of view of both sides so sit back, read quietly and await with interest the next instalment whilst wondering about the feasibility of organising duels at dawn...loser pays.

Welcome to the forum Jafa...are you related to coconut or is a jafa a coconut and what is the actual definition of both...the only difference I ever saw was coconuts were big and tasted great and jafas were thrown from the balcony seats of the picture theatre when I was a kid onto the heads of those below!

I actually thought that Jafa was in Sagamihara Prefecture in Kanagawa, Japan??? I recently met one of the forum members and in his initial email to me told me he came form Jafaland so I assume he must be a neighbour of yours after all if he came from jafaland and you are Jafa then I can only assume you are an important person up there somewhere and he lives close by?

From what my informants tell me there is apparently another definition which down here in the deep south I am blindly oblivious to so perhaps you can enlighten me.

That will be cool - I havent been in touch because the weather has been somewhat akin to something you might expect in Siberia, South Georgia or a walk in freezer when the door snaps shut. Get in touch though Chris and we will arrange something for you and Robert...in fact I havent been out at all. One of the forum mebers was staying up at my place for five or six days and he told me there was snow lying on the ground last Thursday I think it was.

hahaha a duel...yup would be good graham but i wouldnt use a kids toy like a paintball gun..i would use an FNC1 or FNC2..or maybe even a SMG but there is no skill in an SMG as you just point it in the general direction and pull the trigger and let off 30 rounds in a few seconds lol....

As for coming down yes i know both robert and i are looking forward to it...hell if it been that cold down there i would feel right at home being from Canada and all..lol

Yes a duel is one way of solving problems and I am seriously thinking of going into the duelling suppliers business taking into account the fact that this site seems to have a few dissidents who seem to take delight baiting people so maybe its best if they can slug it out - wet rags at 10 paces ten dollars - wet rags at one pace twenty dollars - fists at one pace - bring your own but duelling fee twenty dollars - knives or swords fifty dollars - duelling pistols a hundred dollars - duelling pistols one loaded only - thousand dollar bribe!...I have been known to succumb to bribery, temptation, graft, corruption, tips, gratuities and under the table payments.

I just wish the blasted weather would improve as it is holding things up considerably as far as the gold mining is concerned.

I think the Buller would have been up again in my old haunt, Murchison. Probably finished demolishing the track down. Just have to find another I suppose. Weather in Blenheim has been pretty reasonable, hopefully stays the same. The Marlborough Rock and Mineral club is having it's Christmas picnic in ...............Cullensville. The farmer is going to let us look around for "rock Samples" Seems there was a big slip last week and he went up to look at it and kicked a nice size nugget. The slip came down from one of the benches. Lucky fella. So hopefully....

Hi there Jafa, Welcome to the forum.....I think??.... Seems you have upset a few people already & you have just started.
Yes we have well & truely had the gold versus other stuff disscusion & the result was the seperate page of "Other Treasures" set up for them. It is through coin & relic hunting that many blooded themselves on detectors & learnt there ins & outs & fine tuned their abilities in using them. I was one for many years as gold detecting up here in the northern region, even in the Coromandel, isnt the one. My coin detectors, yes more than one, now gather dust & dont come out that often these days. Takes a big storm to move a lot of sand to get me back on the beachs around here & we havnt had one of those for a while.
So dont take the piss out of others interests & as has been said, if that aint your cup of tea then dont go looking on that page. Quite simple really.
I have got into gold detecting in the last few years & do quite well at it so my focus has gone from the coin & relic stuff to gold. Doesnt mean I give those guys shit as I know the thrill of what they are doing & what they are digging up. I have coffee jars full off coins that would have paid off the detectors many times over. Not to mention gold & silver jewellery. It is all horses for courses & as I said it all helps to learn about detectors & makes stepping up to gold detecting that much easier. But that isnt for every one either.
You say you are a rank newby when it comes to gold & that you know nothing of it or about it or its finding. I expect the only thing you do know about it is that it is worth a few dollars today....& you want part of it.
If you really want help from the guys on this forum your best bet is not to piss them off & wind them up. My best advice would be to have a very good look back over the forum disscussions & you will learn heaps from just doing that with out having to ask a question.
One thing I will say is....If you come to the Coromandel looking for gold....DONT bring explosives. You will end up in jail.

Happy hunting

JW :)

Hi guys
Well i mentiond in an earlyer post i was headn over to the coro...man this gold finding is hard work i panned and panned i hit rocks with my pick...nothing then at the end of the day i found this crack i tried to open it with the pick but couldnt open it so gess what just as well i brought some explosives!! just a little though i packed it into the small crack ...it,s power jell by the way...lit the fuse and crack so i scooped up all the bits that were still in or around the crack or what was left of it put it in my pan and i couldnt bealeve what i saw!!!! or should i say what i didnt see.....no toy bike,s no sinkers no nails no old keys infact no junk at all i thought this carnt be rite i must be in the wrong place
not the best pic i took quite a few but didnt have much luck man i try,d lots of other spots after that but in the end i could hear a car driving around so had to ease of a bit.

G'day Jafa.....Are you serious that you used explosives?????? I hope not!! It only takes one IDIOT to stuff it up for all of us that enjoy a QUIET fossick on the Coromandel. Do you know that fossicking for gold on the Coro or any where in the north island is not an acceptable practice in the eyes of the law. There are no recreational panning areas in the north island.Sure....a pan & shovel & people may look the other way.....but explosives.....you are asking for trouble & you will get it. The one thing you dont want to do on the Coromandel when looking fo gold is to attract attention to what you are doing. Especially with explosives. What are you thinking?? That car that was driving around has probably taken your number plate. So be very careful, & did you really find that speci or are you just taking the piss, because I find that hard to believe??
