Hey Tony....well done again on your silver haul. Love the nice old William the 4th too......mmmm....old silver.
Just looked up your medalette in my copy of Leon Morel's " Medallic Commemoratives of NZ". As you said, it was issued in 1902 to celebrate the coronation of Edward VII and also the end of the Boer War. It was produced in both silver and gilt. Silver being worth around $80 and gilt around $40 in good condition. Both metals considered an R4 on the rarity scale......R4 being scarce. Irrespective of value, this is a fantastic find Tony (yes, I'm jealous much!).......top shelf stuff my friend.

I think those planes were in the toy shops of the 60's.
Still a cool find.

Trench art mostly dates to WWI as most soldiers in WWI were on the move but WWI was static warfare and consequently there was a great deal of time just spent huddled in trenches trying to keep ones mind of the trauma of the battlefield and they did this making Trench Art.

This plane may well have been caste in a mold and then roughly finished by filing as it is a common item and they are all too near alike not to have come form the same source and yet are subtly different as though individually finished - I have one here in front of me and it is virtually the same while still slightly different. I have had it for many years but have never considered it to be Trench Art.

I too always thought "Trench Art" referred to solider made items during the 1st world war. But just looked it up in Wikipedia and it seems the term now has a much wider usage:

Trench art is any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war or civilians, where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences.
Example of huge quantities of shell cases available
Common articles that this includes are decorated shell and bullet casings and items carved from wood and bone.
Not limited to the World Wars, the history of trench art spans conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to the present day.
Although the practice flourished during World War I, the term 'trench art' is also used to describe souvenirs manufactured by service personnel during World War II. Some items manufactured soldiers, prisoners of war or civilians during earlier conflicts have been retrospectively described as trench art.

So technically those brass planes can be Trench Art if they were forged from brass left over from shell cases which will link their manufacture to an armed conflict.

not sure how they fit in. Someone here will know more. Can't find an example of the badge online yet. I will visit my mate with the nz military book on badges and look it up, then update the details here.
