I've been detecting for three years, I started with a Chinese cheapie. It got me started but would NOT recommend this approach to any newbies. My next step was a second-hand Garrett Ace 350, a brilliant detector for a great price. The ace changed my perception of the hobby and within months, I upgraded to a Garrett AT pro with AT pro-pointer, half retail on trade-me. Since I got the Ace 350, six months ago, I have found 7 gold rings, 25 pieces of silver jewellery, 21 silver coins, $430.00 in spendies and the token plus approx 8,000 can tabs and 4,000 bottle tops.

I'm starting my page with a plentiful haul from three afternoons detecting at the spot where I found the trade token a few weeks ago.

First Day: 38 coins, my first half crown (1933) and my first Brit threepence (1925) and my oldest penny to date, unfortunately the mower gakked off the date, but it is a widow head Victoria. also a New Zealand sixpence (1933), silver ring and pocket knife.
UserPostedImage

Second Day: Not as good as the first, no pre decimals but another pocket knife and a silver ear-ring.
UserPostedImage

Third Day: A night detect. Got out of my pre-decimal slump and straight into my first .925 silver coin, mower gakked but still a 1909 brit threepence. Also managed a 1916 penny and a New Zealand half penny, also the usual spendies.

Managed to get two hunts in, one of them being my best ever!!!

Hunt 1: Went for a night detect at the place I got the token, I found my third pocket knife in as many hunts?! Also scored a 1902 half penny, silver shilling and threepence.

Hunt 2: Had another road-trip to the place I found 11 silvers at on queen's birthday. I scored another 10: including two Australian. Also got a hallmarked .925 silver brooch made by John Atkins and son. It has the date letter for 1912-1913. Amongst the sundry items is what I think is a whistle. Any help as to identification would be greatly appreciated.

Think your whistle might be a shot measurer for a liquor bottle

Good idea for display there Trigger.

You got some other special silvers then? Anything from the 1700's?

I have been thinking of something similar, something along the lines of a giant connect 4 (Game) display where I can slot in my silvers as I get them

The rain passed quickly on Sunday morning so I hit the road hoping for big english silver and GOLD. It was not to be but I still unearthed 9 silvers including 3 shillings!!! I scored over 60 coins total but unfortunately 35 of them were 1c's and 2c's. Only digging high signals so probably missing some good treasure but plenty more days to find more.

Enjoying your enthusiasm for the chase mate. Keep the coil to the soil and keep posting the great finds. Just be aware that you may miss the GOLD if you only dig the high tones.......if in doubt, dig it out!

Got out to a new location for a few hours, I had high hopes but only found one threepence, the upsides were a 1907 penny and an old brass girl guides badge.

Hi guys, we got out for a couple of digs over the weekend having found a new spot on our last hunt at which we were keen to spend some real time putting the coil to the soil. The photo's tell the story with some great silver coins, a really neat sterling silver dog whistle on a sterling chain and plenty of spendies.

the square of sterling is likely off a walking stick, methinks.

Got out for one hunt over the weekend and scored some nice silver including my first lion sixpence!!! I also found my first (and second) ever enamel badges. An interesting find was the unfired .303 blank.

Had a roadie up to a new location which I had high hopes for, managed to score 60 coins and 6 pieces of jewellery, unfortunately 34 of the coins were old decimals, but fortunately I found four silvers: a shilling, 2 sixpences and a sterling chain.

One of the brass rings is hallmarked 18ct gold, whats up with that? A forgery?

One of the items I found was a button with a crown on it, it is in the top of the photo. Can anyone ID it?
