Hi guys, a big weekend,

Saturday afternoon:

we went to a local early European settlement area hoping for a fabulous find but it wasn't to be. one 30's NZ sixpence, a few pennies and halves plus the usual odds and sods were the day's takings.

Sunday dawned and we were off on a road trip early, the day was fabulous and we were on the ground by 10 am. The first random walk turned out 3 small silvers over an hour, the next area yielded 4 x small early English and NZ silvers. we were on fire!!! Then things slowed somewhat, lots of odds and sods again, plus 1 & 2 cents by the dozen. Lunch time called for a new plan and we hit the ground enthusiastic and eager but as you no doubt all know, enthusiasm and eagerness don't bring the finds to the surface. A couple of interesting items were dug during the afternoon including a really cool New York Transit Authority enamel charm/pendant and a perfect condition medallion with two horses in the center and around the border "souvenir of this show" but what show and when???? Also a live 9mm round of ammo was dug.

Determined to beat our best number of silvers in one day, we soldiered on and eventually got another 4, equalling our old record of 11, add in a nice sterling silver dolphin ring and a total of over 100 coins and it was a great day all round.
The smell of fish and chips from the local wafting across the still evening air got the better of us so a feed of tarakihi and chips rounded of the day off before heading for home.

TD you can get an idea of date on that medallion by the shape of
the Crown. It is pre 1954 for sure as Elizabeth's crown is a different shape.
There is a lot of Crown info on Google.

This post is a little late, we got out last weekend on Saturday afternoon for a couple of hours and while we turned out nearly 40 coins, not a single silver was to be found, and nothing much of interest other than an unusual rifle shell with heavy ribs on it.

Sunday was a completely different story, we went back to our favourite domain and had a great day. The first silver turned out within 5 minutes and what a find it was: NZ's second rarest threepence (a "1942 one dot") in great condition. We have an area that seems to keep turning out silvers so tried creating a rectangle bounded by some sticks stuck in the ground. We then did a grid search in the opposite direction to the way we normally detect and the silvers kept coming at a regular rate,

A total of 10 silvers and about sixty coins, $27.80 of spendies so not a bad strike rate when 1/6 of the coins your digging are silver !!!

A couple of highlights being our first 'lion" shilling and finding a penny in a clod dug by someone else. It was interesting that someone else had hit our spot and we found silvers within one metre of his clods.

Nice finds. Your unusual grooved rifle round is a dummy round (inert) for practice
If you Google the head stamp markings you should be able to date it.

An overdue post:

Got out for a few hours at a local park and found five silvers plus my first gilt military button: A lion and unicorn.
