Hi their friend
I am also keen on the Wilberforce as I spent many years in the area and owned a hut up at the lake I brought the book a couple of years ago.
I had a job to get it their was a book shop down Manchester street in chch I am sure its gone now via the quake but I am sure he now runs the shop from home along with sourcing books for people he would be a good start but I don't know what the place is called sorry the shop was up near the river I just had a look but theirs no details its called going for gold the search for riches in the Wilberforce valley it was 1st published by doc in 1995 I hope that helps jd

Thanks, pretty hard to find any of those great old places in ChCh these days. You may talking about Smiths who specialise in old nz books but they haven't got copy at the moment . Great website to flick through. I'll keep looking, something will come up. Sounds like you had a place in the Harper village, you didn't have too far to go to pay a visit! Thanks for your reply.

Hi mate, not sure if this is much help but http://www.plumblys.co.nz/ have a book auction on the 24th July in Dunedin with that book in the catalogue. Not sure if they accept phone bids but might be worth a shot?

Cheers.

Thanks very much, great spotting. An auction in Dunedin, I would never have found that. Just hope there's not to many other members interested!

Hi nafcd, wouldn't know where to start. Big river with a massive amount stones, gravel and sand in it and there doesn't sound like there was a lot of gold for a start off. Maybe further up the Wilberforce would worth a look. Keep an eye on the weather though, deadly river. Sounds like you got out in good time Jd, I could stand to be corrected but I don't think you can own those houses/ huts / camp sites anymore. Between Doc and the new owner of glenthorne / rytons station they have taken back the harper village and ryton bay ( well known for opening day of fishing). They had been wanting to sort out for a while. Not to popular especially with those usng the bay/

might have to have a diversion to the lower end of the Wilberforce next time I head to the coast. no 4wd so would only be in walking distance from road. wouldn't imagine getting rich either but might be interesting to see if theres anything at all. who knows there could be an 'honourable roddy' sitting up there with my name on it. lol. yeah right.

Hi there,Wasnt there more than the one book though in that lot number?? No/78 I think it was.
I sent you a pm regarding that book, as I have a copy. I never heard back from you so thought you had lost interest. I certainly would have taken less than $95. I hope you get some good value out of it. It is a good interesting read but very little gold ever came out for all the efforts that were put in. What humans do in the quest of gold. But if you dont look you will never know what is or..... isnt there. Such is the power of gold.

Good luck out there

JW :)

hi kiwiJW, thanks for your note. Unfortunately didn't get your message, don't know way. would've snapped your offer up. t doesn`t really worry me paying a bit of extra money to get it, as long as I got. Maybe its a new market indicator.Your investment has grown in value! No there was only one book in the lot but there were quite a few books I was interested in, so the library has grown. Found it a really interesting site to have a look through. I'm still wonder what amount of gold came out of that mine. Does anybody know??/ Guess it really never started a rush. Really just interested in the area .
Thanks again

Yep, just out the back door as they say. When you guys in Ashburton have a nice wafting nor-wester it'll be blowing its guts out up here! Farm sheep and pigs, unfortunitly the pigs are wild and are a major pain in the arse Whats your story, nafcd?

Try a book written by J.F.Downey Quartz reefs of the west coast mining district new Zealand. It has a good section on the Wilberforce reefs. It was reprinted last year by cadsonbury publications, woolston Christchurch. The original was printed in 1928 and the author was an inspector of mines at the time. hope this is of some help.

no story really bluebird. fairly new to the gold scene. ashburton born and bred and you can keep the norwesters thanks. always amazes me that they are so hot here but get up country and they freeze your nuts off. travel the dry weather road to the coast a fair bit if that's the side of the gorge you are on. dam good short cut.

Bloody computers. I'm interested in early Ag, the land and the people who worked it all, especially in Canterbury. Imagine being one of the very first people to poke your head over the top of the Lyttelton hills with bugger all to your name. Brave people. Moana Anderson, earley Canterbury runs. book on Little port Cooper, the Deans. that sort of thing. Its one of the reasons I'm interested in the mine up the Wilberforce Valley. you take a shovel and pick and walk up there and spend a couple of months. Don't come much more lonely or hard going, but I'm only guessing. Hi Nacf, watch that road if its snowed, bloody long cold walk back to lake Coleridge station.
