I am struggling with beach detecting. Iv been walking along the beach for three weeks now hitting every low tide I can and just don't get many targets. I have read all the tips and watched all the videos I have found but still not getting much. I probably average 1 target every 30 mins for about 30hours.here is some pictures of the beach today, I thought these spots looked ok...they were not. went out for 4 hours ended up going up the beach and digging some rubbish for something to dig. I don't get it, they are very popular beaches.
Please help me again:)

that's only half my collection of sparklers. I only seem to find new 20c when I do find a coin. Yer I guess we just keep at. I do notice the beach change every trip but signals are few and far between even when I grid an area and go slow. My detector goes well and gets deep targets..

Hi Jimmy,

I spent about 2 and a half hours on a city beach tonight.
Found $2.50 in coins.

No gold, no silver not even a junk ring. But thats how it goes sometimes.
Still good fun though.

MK

and there was some eye candy too.

If you live close to the beach keep checking it as much as possible (even everyday if you can) until you learn what parts of the beach erode when, you don't have to have the detector - just build a picture in your mind how the beach changes over time. It can be extremely difficult to know when an area has eroded enough for good finds if you only see it once a month or so.

Also find out which part of the beach has been used the longest by swimmers. For example to me the top 2 pics don't look like they would have had many swimmers 50 or so years ago, but in front of the houses is a possibility depending on the age of those buildings. New / recent drops are very far and few between but if only 5 gold rings are lost per year in an area of beach then over 25 years there will be 125 laying around waiting for you to dig up. The longer an area of a beach has been used the more chance you will have of finding something worthwhile.

Lastly: keep going - it will happen!

Oh and keep your concentration on the detector - not the eye candy! (Oh how I miss beach detecting) :)

Have you tried the tracks leading down to the beach? Also, are there areas within the dunes that couples may sunbathe in private? They can be good spots. What are the small buildings I see in photo 1? May be good areas to check as well. Other area is where the track starts by the car park area.

yep, keep trying

I have been detecting the wet sand at low tide mostly.
today I put away the PI after getting no signals after 1.5hours and got out the at pro and did that track and went for a dry sand hunt, lots of bottle caps and foil
photo 1 is a set area thing.
the photo of my finds are just from the wet sand ..
I feel bad having nothing good for show and tell yet.

Hi me again, in the mid eighties we used to camp way up the north end of ocean, you need a quad or 4x4 to get there. Down at wai mara try around where the boats are are put in behind the reef and north up towards where people come onto the beach. My folks use to live there on Gillies road.

Hi there. Its possible that the sand is just too deep in that area. If you dig down half a meter and your still in loose sand then chances are all the finds are well buried in a meter or two of sand. If you dig down a bit and find wet black sand or shell you should find finds around that area.
The last year or two the easterlies have been building/blowing sand back up on to the beach making it hard to detect the finds.
At my local beach the sand is deep. Its only when the sea roughs it up a bit that we can hit the targets, ie it gouges out guts and troffs. In these cutaways we can get closer to the hard where the finds lay.
There will be a coin line somewhere near the low tide line and another up high in the 2 meters where the sand meets the dunes.

Hope this helps in some way, trial and era, good luck out there.

it can be hard detecting beaches done a bit, some are just frustrating with no signals at all, rivers are good for a break from it,if ya like being around the water, parks are definatley more rewarding, also try detecting in the dunes if ya get bored found a bit of stuff in there when the beach is dead, keep at it and the rings will come lol
