I only did one of the main paths with my At Pro and got a few coins .Im not shore how deep the pro goes up here ...I haven't got anything deeper than 4/5inches in the dry sand. There was a lot of junk signals...not a good area for the PI.
I mite have a dirt hunt tomorrow then go to the beach jater, low tides at 4.50pm..

I don't know how much longer I will be a seamen:) I added up all my finds from the beach and then my gas..$24.30 vs $250 gas after 30 hours.its getting very expensive and I don't think its worth it.. I got $25 at the park last night in 1 hour. Its not about the money but I would like to pay the detector off one day. My AT pro has paid for itself off 6 times over.

finally found the stinky black sand &some clay hard pack bottom today after the storm. It smelt terrible:)..it was about 1m under me this whole time.
Wasn't very nice on the beach ,windy and bit rainy...first time there have been multiple targets with 30mins of each other:)
I have never got any older coins before today. Mite even be worth going back tomorrow...

Defiantly go back tomorrow, and keep hitting that spot again and again. The hot spot will move around a bit but it should keep on producing for quite a while. The stinky black sand is caused by anerobic bacteria which means that it hasn't had any oxygen (exposure to the surface) for many years.

There is a chance you can keep pulling out targets from the surrounding area for a month or more and that will include gold jewelry. If it looks hunted out just expand the area you are detecting to find where the low point has shifted to, you will soon build up a forecast of how it is moving up/down or along the beach. My old "Goldmine" that appeared on a Waiheke beach had exactly the same sort of black oily sand and clay bed. See this post of my blog to see how your patch could move around: Analysing the Goldmine. I was pulling a gold ring from it every 2nd - 3rd hunt but in between I was finding coins just like you had.

Thanks Shilo went back today and took my camera with me this time. I found lots of nails and a few coins best was a 1934 six pence first silver for me at the beach. here's some photos of the erosion and black sand..

Looks like a stream washout? If so these are slightly different but just as profitable as simple erosion. If you get some more heavy rain in the next couple of weeks - make sure you hit it since it will be a wash out of a wash out....

With streams and drains I found that even after the washout has refilled it is worth hunting down on the slope to the wet sand area and around the wet sand below in a fan shape. Coins are easily flipped over and moved by water and a lot of the coins that were in the patch of sand the stream washed out are now down near the low tide area. These coins may currently be too deep for the detector but over the next few weeks will keep cropping up in that area. Can also be good giving the steep cutting in the sand a quick scan each time you are there as this will slowly crumble down and thus expose more finds.

Keep that chin up JB @ least you have got some eye candy to look at, there isn't much of that on the beaches here at the moment.
Your doing way better than me with zero beach finds (except couple of cans & nails) for about four trips to the beach.
But I guess perseverance is the key, I just find it a little dull with no targets.
Keep at it and hopefully you will find a ring or something better to show us.

I don't know about you but the first question I get asked is "have you found any gold yet" or "what are you looking for" I usually show them a bunch of pull tabs, bottle tops etc. have a brief polite chit chat and they are on their way.

I got talking to a guy at the beach yesterday (who I actually know so he is ligit). He was saying when he was a kid they used to find heaps of coins just laying there on the beach waiting to be picked up by hand, the strong winds had stripped all the sand back and exposed all the coins. Dont know if this was a one off or not.

Think I will give the beach a miss until summer (which is quite short in Dunners) and maybe have a wander after a nice hot day. The "beach fails" has been a good read. Thanks Iggy
