Went out on my first real hunt, met up with Foiled in Hagley.. It was quite a success.

May have been beginners luck, but I found two sixpence (1933 & 1945) an old two cent, a modern ten and a modern twenty. I also managed to dig a ring, not sure if its silver or not, will have a better look tomorrow when I add pictures.

Oh, and I only dug seven pieces of trash, so that seems like a pretty good trash:finds ratio.

Cheers Foiled, for the lesson/advice and company. Really enjoyed it!

Pics here!

Ring weight: 2.05g

Any tips on cleaning these up?

Nice finds.
For cleaning silver I soak coins and rings in white vinegar.
It dosen't seem to damage the surface like some other things can do.
Rinse in warm water and buff with a nail brush.

you want to clean the silver coins and ring in cloudy ammonia get it from the supermarket, its actually called cloudy ammonia not cloudy looking lol and then after a 30 minute or hour soak sometimes overnight for really dirty ones, then rinse clean and get some baking soda in palm of your hand and wet it to a liquidy paste not to dry not to wet, and give them a rub with ya finger and the crap just slides off and the coins will be super nice :) congrats on ya finds :)

Here are my finds and trash from last night at North Hagley.

Notable:
1946 Threepence
1967 Two Cent
1967 'One Shilling' Ten Cent
1978 Australian Fifty Cent
$15.20 Spendable
And an iron (I think?) toy soldier missing half a leg, an arm and his head.

Second in from bottom left is a button (like on jeans) which looks to have had an aluminium coloured design on the front, I think it had been mowered, so I trashed it.

From Sunday Afternoon / Night in North Hagley with Foiled and Expat

I'm pretty sure that Penny on the left says 1879, that'd make it my oldest coin so far. The half Penny on the right I can only make out the last two numbers, I'm assuming it's 1927. Can someone advise me on cleaning these Pennies and Half Pennies, can I soak in vinegar, etc?

US Dime is a long way from home, I can't make out the date on it.

Edit: Cleaned up the old Penny a bit, it's definitely 1879, but is it a NZ coin or British?

Notable results from last night at Hagley.

The 1945 Threepence cleaned up real nice. I've just been leaving everything in a bowl to soak overnight in hot water and a little bit of dish-wash liquid.

The 50 cent I figured was pretty worthless so I had a go at cleaning it up with a soft metal brush and a buffing pad on the Dremel, at least it got back to the right colour but it was a pretty harsh cleaning method.

Close!

Name on the back suggests it belonged to some George fella. He must've gone to Hagley a lot because I've found several coins of his there now.

Almost four hours at the beach, targets were few and far between. The digging/retrieval was fantastically fast with the sand scoop to which I attached a 'spare' broom handle with two 25mm U-Bolts I picked up for $3 (paid for with finds) each from Bunnings, pics attached.

The F2 was a dream at the beach, I got right down to the incoming tide. Water was mere feet away from my most recent hole when I had a heart stopping moment and pulled a ring!

Very little false signals at all even with sensitivity one bar from maximum, will definitely be back out there in the soon-to-be-warmer weather with hopefully more targets to dig.

Not sure what the ring is made of, its tarnished and kinda heavy. I thought copper due to the colour it looked. But I'm not really sure.

The ring was probably originally plated with something (silver?); copper seems to be a common base and often all that is left after a bit of corrosion.
