What you want is a "Lesche"

Try http://www.puiakisupply.co.nz/ from the guys on the forum here. When you get it, take to the edge with a file to give it a sharpen and then start to wonder how you ever detected without it!

Sounds expensive but worth every sent and not much difference in price then getting one from overseas. Save up those $1's & $2's that you dig up for a couple of weeks, a major advantage of this hobby is that it pays for itself even for expensive gear. Until you use a Lesche or Predator (which is the original Lesche) you don't know what you're missing, a trowel just doesn't compare.

They are expensive and you can't get them much/any cheaper from overseas, you might be able to if you bundle them with something else but probably not an easy task. Garrett also have one similar, once again with freight about the same price so best to go with the tried and true.

If you're digging shallow targets then I use a serrated (only takes a few minutes with a bench grinder) putty knife costs about $5 at the big red shed or Mitre10, very quick to cut a U shaped plug but only down to about 5" after that it takes a fair bit of digging.

There is another brand that SycoToad uses which are also good only thing I don't like about them is your hand tends to slide down the handle onto the blade pretty easy and as mine is a narrow one where the blade is very similar in diameter to the handle you need to be very careful add mud to the scenario and you will almost certainly get cut. Might not be as bad with the wider ones.

A great tool. I must admit I was sceptical before I splashed out on one but I've bent and broken no end in hard ground over the years and cannot imagine for the life of me that you could bend one of these. Once you have one you realise that you'll not need to upgrade your digger again.

My greatest fear is that when I die my wife will sell my collection for what I told her it cost me.

A good reason to buy the Lesche or the Garrett.
Don't worry it's not real.

The Garrett you have looked good, the Lesche from memory has a thinner blade which would probably make it a bit easier to cut plugs with both have the guard to stop you slipping onto the blade.
Most people give them a sharpen as I've heard they are a bit dull from new. Remember not to overheat it.

Times are tough I thought it was easier to remove the finger than cut the ring, but it was 18ct 5.5g both covered by insurance j/k
